According to chapter 1.5 goods may be assembled to <strong>for</strong>m “load units” by a round-turn lashings made <strong>of</strong> steel strips, steel wires, synthetic or woven straps with a break load <strong>of</strong> at least the values given below. • 5 kN (500 kg) <strong>for</strong> palletised goods weighing up to 500 kg • 7 kN (700 kg) <strong>for</strong> palletised goods weighing over 500 kg, square sawn timber, wooden boards, edge sawn timber, cellulose bales, etc. • 10 kN (1000 kg) <strong>for</strong> wooden sleepers, stone or concrete slabs, etc. • 14 kN (1400 kg) <strong>for</strong> packages and coils <strong>of</strong> sheet steel, bundles <strong>of</strong> steel pipes, steel pr<strong>of</strong>iles and bars, coils <strong>of</strong> wire rods steel strips, steel billets, stacks <strong>of</strong> plywood and hardboard slabs, blocks <strong>of</strong> stone etc. • 20 kN ( 2000 kg) <strong>for</strong> binding together several sheet steel coils 32

Rings, eyelets and hooks made <strong>of</strong> steel rod with a diameter <strong>of</strong> at least 16 mm may be used <strong>for</strong> direct lashing <strong>of</strong> the following cargo weights if two fittings (one on each side <strong>of</strong> the wagon) are used: • Up to 10 tons on flat wagons • Up to 5 tons <strong>for</strong> covered wagons. Eyelets and rings designed <strong>for</strong> the securing <strong>of</strong> tarpaulins can be used <strong>for</strong> securing the following cargo weights: • Up to 2 tons <strong>for</strong> direct lashing • Up to 4 tons <strong>for</strong> indirect (top-over) lashing According to chapter 2.7 five tons <strong>of</strong> cargo only can be secured in longitudinal direction by a partition wall over a width <strong>of</strong> at least 2400 mm and a height <strong>of</strong> 700 mm. If two partition walls are used in combination, the walls can secure seven tons <strong>of</strong> cargo in longitudinal direction. Nails used <strong>for</strong> cargo securing during rail transports should, according to the UIC guidelines section 1 chapter 5.4.3, be round in shape and have a diameter <strong>of</strong> 5 mm. Such nails do not exist on the north European market, see section 3.4 below. Timbers used <strong>for</strong> blocking should have an effective height <strong>of</strong> 5 cm to prevent longitudinal movement and 3 cm to prevent transverse movement. Indirect fastenings (top-over lashings, see below) should, according to chapter 5.5.4, have a breaking strength <strong>of</strong> 10 – 40 kN (1000 – 4000 kg), with an initial tension (pretension) <strong>of</strong> at least 3 kN (300 kg) Friction enhancing inserts must deliver a friction coefficient <strong>of</strong> at least 0.7 according to chapter 5.5.5. 3.3 General methods accepted <strong>for</strong> cargo securing The general methods <strong>for</strong> cargo securing according to the UIC loading guidelines are in general described below. 33
