Chatham, on Cape Cod. Coordinator Carl Goldman expects the largest turnout ever for the three-day meetings, which will combine business with golf and other outdoor activities. Speakers already signed are Henry "Hi" Martin of Universal. C. Glenn Norris of 20th-Pox and Norman Knight of the Yankee Network. The highlight of the convention is the banquet to be hosted by the Coca-Cola Co.. with Boston's gifted and witty exhibitor George Roberts as master of ceremonies. This affair will wind up the convention Thursday evening, September 15. Bernie Menschell Column Probes Pay-TV Problems HARTFORD—Bernie Menschell of the Outdoor Theatre Corp., Manchester, authored the following guest-column on Pay- TV for Allen M. Widem of the Hartford Times: Pay-TV comes If ever to your house, what will you be able to see for money that you can't now see for free? Nobody knows. Since 1955 the Federal Communications Commission has been trying to get the various promoters who have come before it to spell out exactly what programs they will show. To this day this question remains unanswered. As a matter of fact the lawyers for the local promoters of Pay-TV have pleaded with the FCC not to hold an "open" hearing where any claims as to programs could be challenged while the promoters are under oath. The local promoters of Pay-TV claim in general tenns, they will offer first-run movies, plays, sporting events, grand opera, ballet companies and symphony orchestras. You can now see most of these types of programs on your TV set for free. The new movies now available for Free- TV have never been seen by more than three-fourths of our country's population. To these people these movies are first run. The plays of the Hallmark Hall of Fame and similar programs are wonderful and they are on Free-TV. Would it make a sporting event any better if we had to pay for it rather than watching it for free as we do now? "Mike" Ripps concluded a 12-city, crosscountry tour for UA's "Macumba Love" June Wilkinson, star of TJA's "Macumba Love," sits down to a piano in Hartford, while Mrs. Ruth Colvin, Loew's Palace, and Bill Brown, UA exploitation force, look on happily. here, his press-radio-TV interview schedule being designed to call considerable attention to his second theatrical feature (his first, "Bayou," was released by United Artists in 1957). The attraction opened within days after his New England visits in Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Ripps. who was accompanied by featured player June Wilkinson, told Boxoffice: "I have no notion to respect those people in this business of ours not willing to get away from their desks and go out and promote trade. There's an there—but we've got to audience out cultivate it. Activity begets more activity." As far as production budgets are concerned, Ripps holds emphatically to the premise that expenditures can go beyond specified limits if necessary to bringing out the full storyline. "We're not going to stint; we're going to keep on making pictures and selling pictures and retain as much pride and confidence in this industry as we've had in past years!" Allen Widem on Vacation HARTFORD—Allen M. Widem, Hartford Critic BOSTON — American-made motion pictures have found a new defender in Jules Wolffers, assistant drama and film editor of the Boston Herald. In a recent Sunday issue of that paper. Wolffers ran this column This being the time for summer madness. it seems quite a few movie critics are very mad about the state of the American movie industry. Principally they are mad because they feel there is too much big business and not enough high art in Hollywood's output. The most recent diatribe I have read is in the pages of the much-transformed Esquire magazine, which has almost utterly abandoned cheesecake in favor of the higher things of life. And that is fine, for it is now a journal well worth reading. But I wonder if the article in question is entirely fair to our own movies and if some unfair comparisons may not have been made. BIAS FAVORS IMPORTS To this day, we Americans have a bias in favor of the import. Undoubtedly this stems from the days when most of the better things still had to be imported, our forefathers being busily engaged in hacking out a new country. But really, the tide has turned, and there is plenty of fine art, music, theatre and even movies to be found right here on our own shores. Excellence goes in waves and it is perfectly true many prizes in international festivals have gone to foreign films. But our proportion of good versus the routine is no lower than the proportion we find in English. French or Italian cinema. The difficulty is that we usually see only the outstanding imports and then we tend to consider these the noiTn. Nothing could be further from the truth. Have you seen the routine, run-of-the-mill British picture? Pretty dull and boring, I'd say. At least the American counterparts usually have technical expertness to recommend them and surprisingly often they are wellmade and convincing. CRITICS MISS REALISM Realism is lacking in our movies, cry the critics. But since when is realism the only criterion on which to base judgment? We don't always want to plumb the depths when we go out for an evening's entertainment. There is room for lightness and for the fairy-tale stuff, too, for that matter. Our movie people have had a tough time of it this past decade. Television has not had nearly the impact on the rest of the world that it has had here. There has been a revolution in tastes and habits which for a time threatened collapse to the entire movie industry. In my opinion, the American cinema has done well through this period and I have a feeling that we may be in for another cycle of world leadership in fine filmmaking.
