<strong>2007</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club <strong>Manual</strong><br />

Preface<br />

This manual is created for the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club, a program of the <strong>Library</strong> Development<br />

Division of the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Library</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Archives</strong> Commission. The theme is “Sail Away with<br />

Books!” in English <strong>and</strong> “¡Navega lejos con libros!” in Spanish. The programs invite children to<br />

explore oceans, lakes, boats, voyages, water sports, pirates, <strong>and</strong> many related topics.<br />

The <strong>2007</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club manual is available on CD-ROM <strong>and</strong> online at the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />

<strong>Library</strong> web site, www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/<strong>2007</strong>/index.html. Children’s book illustrator,<br />

Diane Stanley, created the artwork for the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club. Lucas Miller created an<br />

original theme song. Youth librarians from cities large <strong>and</strong> small throughout <strong>Texas</strong> wrote the<br />

chapters for the <strong>2007</strong> manual. The CD-ROM <strong>and</strong> the online manual include the exquisite artwork<br />

by Diane Stanley <strong>and</strong> a musical recording of the rousing theme song by Lucas Miller. Please<br />

read about Diane Stanley, Lucas Miller, <strong>and</strong> the librarians who wrote manual chapters in the<br />

“Something about the Artist” <strong>and</strong> the “Something About the Authors <strong>and</strong> Songwriters” sections<br />

of this manual.<br />

There are many exciting elements in the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club manual, including:<br />

• A Celebrations Programs Chapter with ideas to begin <strong>and</strong> end <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club<br />

festivities.<br />

• A section that features puppet plays, reader’s theater scripts, <strong>and</strong> creative drama.<br />

• A Bilingual Programs Chapter with programs for toddlers, preschoolers, <strong>and</strong> families.<br />

• Chapters with programming ideas for toddlers, preschoolers, <strong>and</strong> elementary school<br />

children.<br />

• A chapter with ideas for programming for young adults.<br />

The chapters contain many craft ideas <strong>and</strong> as you explore them, you will find many exciting<br />

ideas for planning <strong>and</strong> hosting an enjoyable <strong>and</strong> successful <strong>2007</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club.<br />

Please also note the information concerning public performance of music <strong>and</strong> film in library<br />

programs <strong>and</strong> the summary of the research on the importance of summer reading that are<br />

included in the introduction.<br />

I would like to express my gratitude to the artist, the authors, <strong>and</strong> to the wonderful staff at the<br />

<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Library</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Archives</strong> Commission, especially Charlotte Craig, Marilyn Johnson,<br />

Julie Hughes, Shawn Clements, Stacey Malek, <strong>and</strong> Hai Nguyen for their dedication to bringing<br />

the <strong>Texas</strong> Reading Club to children throughout our great <strong>State</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a special thank you to the<br />

librarians who bring this program alive by offering it to children throughout <strong>Texas</strong> each year.<br />
