4. Jurisdiction – Appeals Board<br />

(a)<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Appeals Board shall have jurisdiction to determine all timely appeals involving<br />

charges of academic dishonesty.<br />

The student members of the <strong>Student</strong> Conduct Board and the appeals board shall be<br />

nominated by a selection committee, organized and appointed by the student government<br />

association according to the following process.<br />

The student government association shall nominate and solicit nominations for the positions<br />

on the <strong>Student</strong> Conduct Boards for three (3) consecutive meetings. The names of<br />

the nominees and their resumes will be sent to the selection committee.<br />

From this list the selection committee shall interview any qualified candidates to ascertain<br />

their qualifications and select the number needed to fill vacancies in any of the following<br />

positions: five (5) regular members and two (2) alternate members to serve on the campus<br />

<strong>Student</strong> Conduct Board, and three (3) regular members and two (2) alternates to<br />

serve on the <strong>University</strong> Appeals Board.<br />

The names of the students selected to fill these positions will be returned to the student<br />

government association for final approval. The proposed candidates will be voted on individually<br />

and must receive three-fourths of the assembly’s vote to be approved. In the<br />

event any of the proposed candidates fail to be approved by the assembly, the selection<br />

committee will select the number of new candidates needed and present such candidates to<br />

the assembly for the same approval process explained above.<br />

The selection committee shall assign the approved candidates to positions on the boards<br />

in accordance with the process outlined in this section. Both the selection committee and<br />

the student government association shall seek to make the boards representative of the student<br />

population.<br />

Members of the selection committee shall not be eligible to serve on either the campus<br />

<strong>Student</strong> Conduct Board or the <strong>University</strong> Appeals Board.<br />

Members are not selected to serve on either of the boards, specifically. They may hear<br />

cases that come before either board.<br />

The selection process for new board members will generally be completed by<br />

October 1.<br />

6. Selection of Faculty Board Members<br />

(a) Faculty members are designated by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and ratified<br />

by the faculty senate to serve on the boards.<br />

(b) Faculty members are not selected to serve on either of the board’s specifically. They may<br />

hear cases that come before either board.<br />

Bringing of Charges Before the <strong>Student</strong> Conduct/Appeals Board<br />

1. The vice president will represent the <strong>University</strong> in all matters concerning <strong>University</strong> violations<br />

that come before the <strong>Student</strong> Conduct Board and <strong>University</strong> Appeals Board.<br />

2. The vice president shall serve in a liaison capacity between the <strong>University</strong> and both the campus<br />

<strong>Student</strong> Conduct Board and the <strong>University</strong> Appeals Board; provided, however, the same member<br />

of the vice president’s staff shall not act for the <strong>University</strong> in bringing the charge and in the<br />

same case act for the vice president’s office in advising the campus <strong>Student</strong> Conduct Board or<br />

<strong>University</strong> Appeals Board.<br />

3. The dean of student services or dean of student life may confer with the accused to explain their<br />

rights, the conduct of the hearing, and may assist in notifying witnesses.<br />
