sponsor cultural, educational, recreational and social programs with students.<br />

Schwitzer Hall<br />

Schwitzer Hall houses 450 female students. Schwitzer has a recreation room, kitchenettes, study lounge,<br />

a computer room and vending area. The women of Schwitzer Hall participate in hall government, social programming<br />

and all-campus events. The hall has been a spirited and fun home for many <strong>Butler</strong> women.<br />

Schwitzer Hall also offers a Freshmen Living Learning Center with a faculty-in-residence. The FIR coordinates<br />

study efforts and provides academically related and co-curricular programming to build strong relationships<br />

while helping students to succeed in their studies and enhance their feelings of community. In<br />

addition to the FIR, there are three faculty allies, who sponsor cultural, educational, recreational and social<br />

programs with students. Schwitzer Hall also has an exploratory unit.<br />

<strong>University</strong> Terrace<br />

<strong>University</strong> Terrace Apartments houses 94 students in apartments ranging from one-person studios to<br />

four-person, three-bedroom apartments. <strong>University</strong> Terrace is located at the corner of 52nd St. and Westfield<br />

Blvd. This building is staffed by a residence life coordinator, a staff assistant, and four program assistants.<br />

<strong>University</strong> Terrace Apartments feature central air, phone, cable and internet connections as well as bedroom<br />

furnishings and major kitchen appliances. <strong>Student</strong>s must apply to live in <strong>University</strong> Terrace as part of<br />

spring housing lottery. Due to the unique layout of this building it is designated as non-freshmen housing.<br />

Apartment Village<br />

The Apartment Village provides a special housing option for junior, senior and graduate students. The<br />

apartment-style complex, located along Boulevard Place, beside the <strong>Butler</strong> Bowl, houses approximately 500<br />

students. The community is staffed by the assistant director of residence life and four apartment village assistants.<br />

The apartments are designed with four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and kitchen.<br />

They also feature central air, phone, cable and Internet connections. Each bedroom is furnished. Located in<br />

the center of the village is a community center, the Dawghouse. The Dawghouse offers a laundry room, a<br />

convenience store, a computer lab, a lounge/game room and a front desk.<br />

Special residence units<br />

The freshman living learning center is for early-admitted students who choose to live in a community<br />

with some of their classmates and interact with faculty in residence. (Available in Schwitzer and Ross Halls)<br />

The substance-free unit, where residents and guests may not smoke, use tobacco products or alcohol<br />

while living on this unit. All residents are required to sign an agreement about their commitment to a substance-free<br />

environment. (Available in Schwitzer, ResCo and Ross Halls)<br />

The international living learning center provides international and American students with a unique<br />

alternative living environment. Residents form an international community and participate in field trips,<br />

dinners, dances and lectures. (Available in ResCo)<br />

The exploratory residential unit provides exploratory major students with programming and camaraderie<br />

for their first year. Programming will be determined by students’ needs and interests. (Available in<br />

Schwitzer)<br />

Fraternity and Sorority Housing<br />

Many students also decide to join one of <strong>Butler</strong>’s 16 national fraternities and sororities, 14 of which offer<br />

housing. Sophomores and upper class level students may live in a Greek house with which they are affiliated.<br />

Off-campus housing<br />

Living off-campus may be an option for senior students. <strong>Student</strong>s are encouraged to become aware of the<br />

laws, codes, and ordinances applicable in the community as they are expected to uphold the law, just as all<br />

citizens. The monthly Greater Indianapolis Apartment Guide lists apartments/houses available for rent.<br />

Before renting off-campus housing, students should ask the landlord to explain all rules. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

should be certain that they understand and agree to everything in the lease. Some things to consider before<br />

signing a lease:<br />
