Technical tips
1. The pictures must be clear enough to be seen the length of the classroom and at
some speed. Magazine photographs may sometimes be too complicated and full of
irrelevant detail. One way of reducing the distracting detail is to cut away the
background leaving the main shape.
2. Line drawings should be simple and not sketchy. The lines should he quite thick, the
shape should be as suggestive of the object as possible.
3. Colour should be used to make the shape stand out clearly and to contribute to
recognition; for example, orange for an orange, yellow for a lemon. Sometimes colour
can be used to draw attention to a small shape in the picture, for example, a small
present; the rest of the picture can be drawn with black lines and the present can be
brightly colored. Just using colors for decorative purposes is probably a mistake in
language teaching.
4. Card is expensive. Sometimes cheap ‘cuts' can be obtained free from a local printer.
Otherwise use food packets or cut up cardboard boxes.
Word flash cards
Word flash cards are usually about 8 cm in height and are as long as is necessary for
the text. They are principality, though not exclusively, used in the teaching of reading
and writings.
