9.2 Assembly and Command Ship<br />

Functions and<br />

characteristics<br />

The ACS (fig. 9-6) performs four functions for <strong>Sea</strong> <strong>Launch</strong> operations:<br />

• It serves as the facility for assembly, processing, and checkout of<br />

the launch vehicle.<br />

• It houses the launch control center (LCC), which monitors and<br />

controls all operations at the launch site.<br />

• It acts as the base for tracking the initial ascent of the launch vehicle.<br />

• It provides accommodations for the marine and launch crews<br />

during transit to and from the launch site.<br />

The ACS is designed and constructed specifically to suit the unique requirements<br />

of <strong>Sea</strong> <strong>Launch</strong>. The ship’s overall dimensions are nearly<br />

200 m (660 ft) in length and 32 m (110 ft) in beam. Its overall displacement<br />

is approximately 30,830 tonnes (34,000 tons). Major features of the<br />

ACS include<br />

• A rocket assembly compartment.<br />

• The LCC.<br />

• An LCC viewing room.<br />

• Helicopter capability.<br />

• Spacecraft contractor and customer work areas.<br />

• Spacecraft contractor and customer accommodations.<br />
