any sound of horn. They always yield when pedestrians just about to cross a road. You can see their smile through the windscreens. Arriving at U-Dub, I saw students from all around the world. It was easy to distinguish between foreigners and Asians. Students there usually wear casually. A pair of slippers, a tee and a short form their uniform because the weather there is usually sunny in summer. Within the three weeks when we stayed there, sky was clear without cloud except two days. It was really nice! By visiting different parts of Seattle, I found that there are very few Chinese in Seattle. Although there are more Chinese in China Town, it is just a small number when compared with China Town in San Francisco. Also, most of the Chinese there speak Putonghua but not Cantonese because most of them come from the Mainland China or Taiwan. One interesting thing is that when an Asian sees another Asian, those with brown iris, he or she would keep a look at that guy for a few minutes. It seems that he or she are meeting an old friend. One site of Seattle, Bellevue downtown, can be regarded as a gay centre. It is located in the southern east of U-Dub, about 15 minutes away by bus. This is so called because many homosexuals love to linger around the streets there. They can be easily distinguished out. Usually, a homosexual dye hair, wear black clothes with some fancy things like a metal chain across a trouser, wear big earrings and with something tattooed on his or her body. They looked unfriendly and we didn’t take any photo with them. Beggars appear after 5 pm every day. They are usually the Black. Some may ask for money exchange, while some others may ask for money. Whenever we encounter them, we always pretend we don’t know English. This is the safest way to avoid trouble. 15
Shopping New shopping experience --- Janet 14/7 was an important day. Why? This is because it was our shopping day. ^-^ we, all together 18 people, went to the biggest shopping mall near Seattle –Super mall. Can you image how large it is? It is just like a paradise. There are more than 100 shops. We spent more than 4 hours to shop all the shops. Many famous brands also had outlets there, e.g. Levis’, Gap, etc. However, the mall was quite far away from downtown Seattle. It took about 1.5 hours driving to there. Therefore, when we traveled there by bus, it took us about 2-3 hours. It is the farthest mall we have been there. Shopping in Seattle was different from that in Hong Kong. Because many shops in Seattle were self-served. That means when you want to try some shoes, you could find it on the shelves yourselves. Once you think it is suitable, you could ask the salesperson to give you a new one. It is very free and comfortable. Besides, shopping in clothing shops is also very free, you can try any clothes in the changing room. And tell the salesperson how many clothes you took and you want to try. Then, you can try any numbers of clothes you want. The shopping cultures in USA and Hong Kong are very different. When comparing with USA, salespeople in Hong Kong are less polite. For examples, once you go into a shop, the salesperson will follow you until you leave. They are afraid that you steal or break their products. However, when you go to a shop in USA, you are very free and comfortable to try any clothes you want no matter you have incentive to buy one or not. The salespeople would not blame at you even though you do not buy after you have tried many clothes. In addition, there are sale taxes in USA. Different states have different tax rates. Even different cities have different rates. For examples, the sale tax in Seattle is 16
