2) Type Of course, you can enjoy traditional Western food in the campus. Sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, hamburgers, french-fries, pizza, pasta, etc… are available around the campus during the day. If you are not accustomed to fast food or cold dishes, Indian and Chinese food, usually rice, is ready to serve too. You can also enjoy sushi sold in a coffee and snacks shop too. There are different kinds of snacks sold in the convenience stores. We usually bought ourselves some cookies and instant noodles there for breakfast and sometimes, for dinner. However, to most of the Asians, food in America is somehow too sweet (too much sugar and chocolate) and fatty (usually deep-fried). HOT DOGS! 3) Price If you compare the price of food in UW with those sold outside the campus, you probably will not find great difference. However, by comparing the price of eating in Seattle and Hong Kong, you will think that it costs too much to have your stomach filled there. It takes you three dollars for a slice of pizza and another 1.5 to two dollars for a drink. It is almost the cheapest combination already. If you want a hamburger combo or sandwich, it costs even more. For purchasing a box of rice, you may have to pay more than six. However, the most expensive is the dinner. As we have mentioned, there is only one cafeteria provides you with dinner. And that cafeteria only provides buffet for you. You must pay more than seven dollars for a meal! Thus, when we wanted to spend less, we would purchase cookies and instant noodles in the convenience store rather than having meals in the restaurants. Also, fruit in UW is extremely expensive, you have to pay 50 cents for one banana! Thus, although we used to eat a lot of fruit in Hong Kong, we seldom bought it in the campus. Sometimes, we would rather buy it outside. 21
4) Custom There is a custom which we are not used to follow in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, no matter we are in a restaurant or fast food shop, we may not have a habit to tidy up the table after the meal. We usually just leave the trays, plates, cups, etc… on the table and wait for the waiters to collect them for us. However, in Seattle and also in the United State, it is usually their habit to collect them by themselves after the meals. Even though you are having buffet in the cafeteria, you have to do the clean up by yourself too. 22
