The Program
English Language and Culture Program --- Gordon
This summer, we 15 guys joined the Short Term English Program (STEP) by
English Language Program, University of Washington. There are three different
programs. Most of us studied in English Language and Culture STEP program and
one in Advanced English Seminar. Here I am going to talk about the English
Language and Culture program and Kathy is going to tell you more about the
Advanced English Seminar.
English Language and Culture program is the most popular program in the
STEP that there are two classes and 14 of us are separated into two classes. I am in
Cindy's class and some other students in Allyson's class. They are both the
experienced and nice teachers and our tour guides at the same time.
English Language and Culture program is a 3-week program, from July 8 to
July 26, there were lessons in the morning from Monday to Friday. As the course is
called language and culture, it is absolute not boring that only lecture, but many
different outings and activities at the same time. For example, we visited a wet market,
went to a museum, watched a baseball game and traveled to many places that Yvonne
and Priscilla will tell you more.
Pike Place Market --- a wet market. Maybe wet market is not as popular as in
the Western society, and maybe Pike Place Market is old enough and well organized,
it is a famous visiting area in Seattle. There are many different shops selling different
things like seafood, flowers, fruits and souvenir, etc. There are also many restaurants.
However, things really attract us and show the American culture are the way they sell
seafood --- they throw the seafood that the customer buys from this end of the shop to
another end and throw it to the customer finally, it is really very funny and just like a
game. Also, the first Starbucks café is just next to this market. It opened in 1902 and it
is 100 year-old. We enjoyed a cup of coffee there and the singers' performance
outside.
