Before I came to Seattle, I read some information about it from the internet and books. And according to my memory of the film “Sleepless in the Seattle”, I believed that the weather in Seattle wouldn’t be very good. My thought came true on the first day when we arrived Seattle. The weather, the sales taxes, those expensive goods and the situation of not enough blankets, all made us very upset. When the class began, everything seems changed! Almost everyday was a sunny day; we needed to find every way to avoid the sunshine. We could use our Husky Card to pay for our meal although it was very expensive. We met some new friends even all of our classmates are Asian. The life in the dormitory was quite different from the experience we have in CU. Can you image that there only have a kitchenette each floor, not a fully equipped kitchen? Can you image that boys and girls are living in the same floor? Actually I felt uncomfortable. The classes were not like the normal classes we had before. We needed to do interview, and this Mercer Hall made me felt more comfortable to speak English. The excursions were also wonderful. I still remembered that day when we visited Mt. Rainier. Seattle is a very beautiful city. It seems everywhere are lakes, including Lake Union and Lake Washington. Usually we did our explorations during those free afternoons. To the bus system, we became more and more familiar with it. Otherwise the transfer would not help us to as much money as we can. We are not rich, right? The experiences in Seattle included good things and bad things. Both made me remembered UW and Seattle well. Yin 31
Seattle is really a beautiful city! The STEP course in UW is quite good that we can learn English through a natural way. I like their activities, which were included in the course, especially the trip to Pack Forest and Mountain Rainier. We had a really wonderful night living in the forest. Till now, I still remember the blue sky and the sky with many little stars at night. Sitting around the fire and making s’mores, telling ghost stories and sliding on the ice on Mountain Rainer…these are the things that impressed me most. Studying and living in UW are good experiences, don’t forget to find a sunny day, laying on the green grass or reading books under a tree, these are great activities without any charges. I am so happy that I had made many new friends via this program, the friends in our group and also friends from Taiwan. They are all so nice and funny. Thank you guys that bring me a lot of fun! Inty My first impression in Seattle was very cold because I arrived there in a rainy day and I hated it. However, I started to love Seattle in the next day. I found that Seattle is a nice and wonderful city when it is sunny. You can always see a beautiful blue sky with the smell of grass and hear the birds singing. People there are very nice as they are always willing to help the others. In the 3-week trip, I have traveled around to explore Seattle, such as the Snoqualmie Fall, Mountain Rainier, Green Lake & Seattle Center, etc. Also, we have gone to the Downtown and Super Mall for shopping. So, I really enjoyed the 3-week trip in Seattle. That is why people always say that Seattle is the most livable city in USA. Yvonne 32
