As we have seen, we use the with common nouns when the noun being modified is a defined<br />

noun. A defined noun meets two criteria:<br />

1. The noun is known to the speaker.<br />

2. The speaker can reasonably assume that the listener will also know which specific noun<br />

the speaker has in mind.
