mortality, it was impossible to assess a possible <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>se<br />
parameters as described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature. Given that many breed clubs keep such<br />
records <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir archives, it would be <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to comb<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> present database with<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong>se fertility parameters to fur<strong>the</strong>r analyse possible <strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g effects<br />

The ma<strong>the</strong>matical analysis <strong>of</strong> pedigree data is an important part <strong>of</strong> genetic research,<br />
<strong>and</strong> large pedigree databases also constitute a powerful tool <strong>in</strong> search<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
molecular markers for certa<strong>in</strong> hereditary conditions. While it was possible to<br />
document <strong>the</strong> heredity <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> diseases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present data, <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
on complete litters made it impossible to determ<strong>in</strong>e exact modes <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>heritance. It<br />
would <strong>the</strong>refore be an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g possibility to comb<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> pedigree <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> present database with health data on complete litters to study modes <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>heritance.<br />
The present database could also serve as a useful base for <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>dex selection based on estimation <strong>of</strong> breed<strong>in</strong>g values us<strong>in</strong>g BLUP models. Given<br />
<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts specified above, it would be important to try <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />
complete litters whenever possible <strong>in</strong> future databases.<br />
