S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> term “Dilatative Cardiomyopathy” (DCM) was not widely used before 1980,<br />
it is unclear what <strong>the</strong> exact diagnosis was <strong>in</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier causes. Both<br />
Bernardi (1986) <strong>and</strong> Prokopenko (1998) thus did not use DCM as a death category<br />
<strong>and</strong> stayed with “Cardiovascular disease”. The same reservation applies to <strong>the</strong> older<br />
datasets <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study at h<strong>and</strong>.<br />
While <strong>the</strong>re is no general agreement on whe<strong>the</strong>r a sex predisposition exists, males<br />
were found to be at an <strong>in</strong>creased risk <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies where such a predisposition was<br />
described (Bernardi 1986; Vollmar 1998; Vollmar 1999 b; Vollmar 2000; Broschk<br />
2004; Egenvall, Bonnett et al. 2006). The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present study also support<br />
<strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>creased risk for males (see chapter 6.1.6.2).<br />
3.3.3 Heredity <strong>and</strong> Control Measures<br />
The assumption that AF may have a hereditary component <strong>in</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s was<br />
first brought up <strong>in</strong> 1994 (Harpster 1994), <strong>and</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r evidence for a familial<br />
predisposition was discussed by Vollmar (1996), Brownlie <strong>and</strong> Cobb (1999), <strong>and</strong><br />
Vollmar (1999 b).<br />
A familiar pattern <strong>of</strong> DCM has been observed <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> it was suggested<br />
that an autosomal dom<strong>in</strong>ant pattern <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>heritance would be fitt<strong>in</strong>g to expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
