3.8.2 Epizootology<br />
An epilepsy <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> 18.7% was described <strong>in</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> n=796 related <strong>Irish</strong><br />
<strong>Wolfhound</strong>s from 120 litters (Casal, Munuve et al. 2006). This figure is unlikely to be<br />
representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole population, however, s<strong>in</strong>ce only 23 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se dogs came<br />
from litters (n=5) that were free <strong>of</strong> epilepsy, even though <strong>the</strong>y were born to parents<br />
who had both produced affected <strong>of</strong>fspr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r mat<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Mean ± SD age at onset was 27.6 ± 16.8 months <strong>in</strong> females <strong>and</strong> 33.9 ± 18.5 months<br />
<strong>in</strong> males. The overall age ranges for seizure onset were 6 to 84 months <strong>in</strong> females<br />
<strong>and</strong> 6 to 107 months <strong>in</strong> males. Significantly more dogs had <strong>the</strong>ir first seizure before 3<br />
years <strong>of</strong> age than after 3 years <strong>of</strong> age (P
