2 Introduction<br />

"It is impossible to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> present without know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> past."<br />

The <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong> is a breed <strong>of</strong> dog that has been ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> popularity<br />

considerably over <strong>the</strong> past three decades (see chapter 6.1.1). As a result, <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary papers on <strong>the</strong> subject has been <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g steadily. Thus, it<br />

suggested itself to br<strong>in</strong>g some organisation <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> work that already exists on <strong>the</strong><br />

subject, <strong>and</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g some orig<strong>in</strong>al research was added as an <strong>in</strong>tegral part <strong>of</strong> a<br />

<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

As this study shows, <strong>the</strong>re are a substantial enough number <strong>of</strong> articles on health<br />

conditions <strong>in</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary literature to warrant writ<strong>in</strong>g a review<br />

article. The goal was to provide <strong>in</strong>terested cl<strong>in</strong>icians with a tool to broaden <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s as a breed with its specific disease predilections, as<br />

well as to enable <strong>the</strong>m to counsel breeders <strong>and</strong> owners on <strong>the</strong> modes <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>heritance<br />

<strong>of</strong> different diseases <strong>and</strong>, subsequently, selection aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The author has also been frequently confronted with a number <strong>of</strong> questions on <strong>the</strong><br />

genetics <strong>and</strong> lifespan <strong>of</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, such as:<br />

- Did <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s live longer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past than <strong>the</strong>y do nowadays?<br />

- Are <strong>the</strong>re familial <strong>and</strong>/or geographical differences <strong>in</strong> lifespan?<br />

- Are <strong>the</strong>re familial <strong>and</strong>/or geographical differences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />

diseases?<br />

- What are <strong>the</strong> genetic bases <strong>of</strong> lifespan?<br />

- Are <strong>the</strong>re negative effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Wolfhound</strong>s?<br />

- Can founder animals for certa<strong>in</strong> diseases be identified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breed history?<br />

- What strategies should be used to improve health <strong>and</strong> longevity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breed?<br />

Op<strong>in</strong>ions on <strong>the</strong>se questions vary greatly among different dog fanciers, but rarely are<br />

<strong>the</strong>y based on anyth<strong>in</strong>g but what is referred to as "personal experience" – a person's<br />

own subjective impressions, which are not usually based on a significant number <strong>of</strong><br />

observations, nor on any statistical evaluation <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> which is<br />

probably as <strong>in</strong>consistent as <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ions are <strong>the</strong>mselves. Confirmation bias might<br />

also play an important role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>of</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ions encountered.<br />

This study endeavours to f<strong>in</strong>d some responses to <strong>the</strong>se questions that are based on<br />

a large amount <strong>of</strong> data <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardised statistical analysis. While not all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

above questions could be answered satisfactorily, it was possible to shed some light<br />

on demographic trends, <strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence, lifespan development over time,<br />

founder animals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern population <strong>and</strong>, to a certa<strong>in</strong> degree, geographical,<br />

familial <strong>and</strong> founder <strong>in</strong>fluence on lifespan <strong>and</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> death through this approach.<br />

When read<strong>in</strong>g veter<strong>in</strong>ary papers on hereditary conditions <strong>in</strong> dogs <strong>in</strong> general <strong>and</strong> <strong>Irish</strong><br />

<strong>Wolfhound</strong>s <strong>in</strong> particular, it is common to f<strong>in</strong>d publications that were unable (or<br />

unwill<strong>in</strong>g) to track pedigree <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> studied dogs go<strong>in</strong>g back more than just<br />

a few generations. Putt<strong>in</strong>g a pedigree database toge<strong>the</strong>r from national studbooks <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r sources is a time-consum<strong>in</strong>g task that few researchers have <strong>the</strong> resources to<br />

undertake to reach <strong>the</strong> highest possible number <strong>of</strong> generations. As a consequence,<br />

<strong>in</strong>accurate results when calculat<strong>in</strong>g genetic parameters such as lowered <strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g<br />
