New directory
available on first
aid and fire
fighting equipment
A new directory has been published by the
Fire Extinguishing Trades Association (FETA)
containing invaluable information on the use
of fire extinguishers, along with contact
details for all members of the association.
The Directory is one of the most popular items
produced by FETA, providing at a glance a list of
companies who supply, install and maintain first
aid fire fighting equipment.
At the back of the directory there is also a guide
to the range of extinguishers available, including
the applications to which they are suited.
Maritime history
benefits from wire
free fire protection
Brunel’s steam ship, the ss Great
Britain, was an engineering marvel,
way ahead of it’s time, so it is
fitting that today’s latest technology
is being used to provide new
levels of fire detection for this
historic ship. As part of a £11 m
project to restore the ss Great
Britain as a major tourist attraction,
EMS
Group’s 5000 FirePoint radio analogue
addressable fire detection
system is providing wire-free fire
detection for the
ship itself, dry
dock and the associated
complex.
The system consists
of 5 control
panels and 190
devices, the control
panels being
networked by
radio ensuring
seamless communications
between
each of the buildings
and areas of
protection without
Health & Safety management
at the click of a button
having to install
expensive sitewide
cabling.
The project was developed with a
local approved installer in co-operation
with the main project managers,
Capita Symonds and the
Bristol office of consultants WSP.
WSP have successfully collaborated
with EMS on a number of fire
detection projects and so already
knew the many benefits a wire-free
solution would bring to the project.
5000 FirePoint eliminates costly
fire rated cable and the damaging
works associated
with installing
wired systems - an
important issue
when restoring a
historic landmark
such as the ss
Great Britain. As
wiring is eliminated
the field
devices can easily
be moved or
upgraded in the
future if the fire
protection for the
ship and buildings
needs to change.
Recognising the importance of a
safe working environment and
the emphasis currently placed
on the management of Health
and Safety at every organisational
level, ESS-UK, the total support
services division of Compass
Group, has introduced an innovative
on-line Health and Safety
reporting structure to its already
comprehensive web-based and
award winning Health, Safety,
Quality and Environmental system,
creating a common platform
that reduces administration
time and improves business efficiency.
ESS-UK’ s resourceful on-line
reporting system captures Health and Safety
data at source, consolidating information into a
central information store, ensuring the effective
management of legal requirements in
respect of accident record information.
Reliance on distributed spread-sheets, faxes, e-
mails and the traditional ‘accident report book’
has been significantly reduced with the introduction
of the web-based system, which provides
employees at every level and location with
a single source infrastructure that offers security
and flexibility in the management of Health
and Safety reporting requirements.
At present ESS-UK has approximately fifty business
locations throughout the UK, employing
around 1500 staff, all of whom benefit from this
unique web-based system, enabling the capture
of data on individual accidents, incidents, hours
worked and events at source. This offers significant
benefits in terms of consistency and
streamlining the reporting process and providing
a central information store and instant reporting
options.
Rowena Edwards, MD of ESS-UK commented:
“The introduction of our on-line Health and
Safety reporting system further demonstrates
our commitment to good working practices and
our efforts to create an environment of self
driven continuous improvement. The new system
also communicates a positive attitude
towards Health and Safety data management to
all our employees.
“This is a significant endorsement of the unique
approach we take in creating a safe and efficient
working environment and also demonstrates
our commitment towards long-term
business efficiency.
