health & safety New directory available on first aid and fire fighting equipment A new directory has been published by the Fire Extinguishing Trades Association (FETA) containing invaluable information on the use of fire extinguishers, along with contact details for all members of the association. The Directory is one of the most popular items produced by FETA, providing at a glance a list of companies who supply, install and maintain first aid fire fighting equipment. Reader Reply No.: 84032 Maritime history benefits from wire free fire protection Brunel’s steam ship, the ss Great Britain, was an engineering marvel, way ahead of it’s time, so it is fitting that today’s latest technology is being used to provide new levels of fire detection for this historic ship. As part of a £11 m project to restore the ss Great Britain as a major tourist attraction, EMS Group’s 5000 FirePoint radio analogue addressable fire detection system is providing wire-free fire detection for the ship itself, dry dock and the associated complex. The system consists of 5 control panels and 190 devices, the control panels being networked by radio ensuring seamless communications between each of the buildings and areas of protection without Health & Safety management at the click of a button having to install expensive sitewide cabling. The project was developed with a local approved installer in co-operation with the main project managers, Capita Symonds and the Bristol office of consultants WSP. WSP have successfully collaborated with EMS on a number of fire detection projects and so already knew the many benefits a wire-free solution would bring to the project. 5000 FirePoint eliminates costly fire rated cable and the damaging works associated with installing wired systems - an important issue when restoring a historic landmark such as the ss Great Britain. As wiring is eliminated the field devices can easily be moved or upgraded in the future if the fire protection for the ship and buildings needs to change. health & safety OCS Technical’s safe roof walkways The Safety division of OCS Technical has added a walkway system to their already wide range of products to provide designated walkway facilities to customers. Installed by OCS Technical’s Safety division, the Suregrip System is produced from recycled UPVC and, in most circumstances, can be installed without penetrating the roof membrane. This allows property managers to establish a safe walkway, providing access to roofs and exteriors, without compromising the roof’s guarantees or risking leaks. During the extrusion process, a unique safety tread is incorporated onto the top plank, ensuring that the surface remains non-slip, even when wet. The Suregrip Walkway System helps provide the means of safe access to the requirements of the Construction (Health Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1996 and the Construction Design and Management (CDM). The system also conforms to the Health Safety Executive’s guidelines in the HS(G)33 booklet on Health and Safety in Roof Work.
