from the editor... Leader column It's that time of year again, a time when the big guns in FM issue their trading statements and results. Judging by the ones I've seen, FM is going from strength to strength. Year-end results for construction and services company HBG were impressive, showing a 15% increase in profit before tax to £18.7m, and turnover up 28% to £809.5m. Apparently facilities management and property development now represent nearly £200m of the £1bn of work HBG secured entering into 2005. HBG's PFI and facilities management businesses performed well, completing a £15.4m PFI project at Wharfedale Locality Hospital in Otley and phase 1 of the £60m Crawley Schools PFI. It also achieved financial close on the £57m Bristol Schools and the £53m East Renfrewshire Schools projects, and was selected as preferred bidder for the £60m five Bromsgrove Schools project, near Birmingham. Turnover at HBG Facilities Management doubled over the year to £8m and the division now employs over 250 people, with an order book in excess of £300m. Elsewhere, interim results at international project management and services company AMEC showed a 7.1% rise in underlying pre-tax profit, to £40.9m, and an order book up 20%, to £2.9bn. The value of AMEC's PPP portfolio also increased - to £99m. The book value of AMEC's eleven ongoing PPP projects increased from £42m to £56m, mainly thanks to the Docklands Light Railway Woolwich Arsenal extension in London, and a 23% interest in the Incheon Bridge project in South Korea. While AMEC and HBG were reporting substantial profits in their results, another of the big players was announcing a move designed to ensure its profits would keep travelling in the right direction. According to reports, Land Securities Trillium now intends to dispose of its 50% share in Telereal to subsidiaries of its joint venture partners. Pears Trusts Group and William Pears Family Holdings Limited will pay £300m for the stake in Telereal, which was formed in 2001 when LST and Pears purchased the BT property portfolio for £146m each. Ian Ellis, chief executive of LST, said: "This deal enables us to benefit from an ongoing income stream from Telereal while realising the value of our shareholding and thereby enabling us to demonstrate the value inherent in LS Trillium." In its 2005 annual report, Land Securities said it did not expect profits from Telereal to continue at the same levels as in previous years. While the afore mentioned big three hit the headlines for profit related reasons, another key player was making news for a different reason entirely. Caxton Facilities Management, the Cardiff-based subsidiary of Kier Group, announced it had changed its name to Kier Managed Services Ltd. A spokesman for Caxton said the name change better reflected the company's status as Kier's national facilities management provider. And finally, my month just wouldn't be complete without a mega-money deal to report and last month ran true to form. News broke that property-based support services business Inspace had won an £80m, 10-year responsive repairs contract with the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Under the deal Inspace will repair around 6,000 properties in the south of the borough and manage all the empty properties in the 13,000-unit portfolio. 4 www.practicalfm.co.uk

Blade servers with underfloor cooling solution from AET Computer room cooling specialist, Advanced Ergonomic Technologies (AET), has introduced a new high output fan tile unit as a component part of its Flexible Space System, incorporating Hiross underfloor air conditioning. The TU EXTREME, (or TUX for short), is a specially developed solution designed to keep blade server temperatures under control, eliminating problems with heat dissipation, hot spots, equipment overheating and thermal shut down. “Today, a fully loaded 42 unit blade chassis produces roughly 12 Kilowatts of heat, about 50% more than a typical household oven” says AET’s Managing Director, Glan Blake Thomas. “Aircooling systems must move 140 cubic feet of air for every I Kilowatt generated, to maintain temperatures below the 25-27 0 C point, at which system performance dips and component life-span is reduced. Where data centres upgrade to blade servers, IT managers are finding that existing close control cooling technology is unable to cope with such demanding cooling loads. Flexible Space featuring the TUX fan tile units is the answer.” AET’s TUX units can be recessed into most kinds of computer floor as an integral part of the company’s Flexible Space System. These coolers draw the cool air from the floor void to the areas where it is needed, delivering it directly into the front and back of the server units. Each TUX is located within a standard 600mm square floor tile. These individually controlled units have the capacity to provide 5 Kilowatts of cooling, moving air at a rate of 1400 m3/hr. This performance is unrivalled by any comparable, close control air-conditioning solution. In tests at Hewlett Packard in Germany, TUX units have been found to reduce blade server temperature down to an average of around 23- 24 0 C, the right temperature to allow effective and reliable operation. The units may stand alone or be linked by data cable for remote monitoring and control. AET’s Flexible Space System is also a cost-effective approach to data centre cooling should the room layout change in the future. Since they are not restricted by duct or pipe connections, the TUX units in a system are easily interchangeable with floor panels.
