gold at 2004 Olympic
In August 2004, the eyes of the
world were on Athens and the
Olympic Games Opening
Ceremony, which promised to be
history in the making.
A ten thousand square foot manmade
lake containing over two million
litres of water covered almost
the entire stadium floor. The show
started with a pyrotechnic comet shooting through the arena to ignite
the lake in the shape of the Olympic Rings.
The lake was constructed around a vast submerged platform, which
would enable the opening performers to appear to ‘walk on water’.
When the water drained away, it created the platform on which thousands
of performers and competitors would make their entrance and
mark the start of the Games.
With seventy-two thousand spectators in the stadium and an estimated
four billion people watching worldwide, there could be no room for
accidents or errors, and only one material met and exceeded specifications.
Essex based company Fibreglass Grating Ltd were delighted to
be contracted to supply the floor grating for this project.

New ‘business park’ bollard
from Bollards International
With glass being used as an architectural
feature to an ever greater extent in the
new buildings being built to create business
parks nationwide, Bollards International
has launched a new bollard designed
specifically for use in such environments.
Bollards International manufacturers a
range of polymer based bollards, railings
and street furniture which are now being
specified instead of the traditional cast iron
products by a growing number of architects,
development companies and local
authorities.
The first installation of the new silver painted polymer bollards has
been made at the business village (three buildings) being leased by
Fujitsu Services at Central Park in North East Manchester.
The original product specification called for a stainless-steel bollard
with two neoprene rings to protect the glass from accidental impact
damage. 1-lowever, discussions with Bollards International resulted in
the specification being changed to silver painted polymer as this
weathers far better than stainless steel, which can often go dull and
gain a brownish surface tinge. The manufacturer was also able to
demonstrate that a polymer bollard offers a greater impact resistance
than stainless steel. The final amendments to the specification saw the
inclusion of polyurethane protection rings, rather than those originally
specified as neoprene, for reasons of durability and longevity.
Bame Colvin, Managing Director of Bollards International, believes this
new bollard will have particular appeal in the business park environment,
saying:
“Visual impact is of great importance in the business park environment,
and our new silver-coated polymer bollard gives the same overall
impression of quality and design style without the drawbacks associated
with impact performance and long term weathering.”
The three buildings in the Fujitsu business village which are now protected
by the new bollards house Fujitsu staff working in the IT services
industry.

Baler from HSM
Recognising that space is at a premium, particularly
inside industrial and commercial
premises, HSM has now weather proofed
their newest baler for external operation.
The new V-Press 1160 produces a large millsized
bale ideal for recycling and improved
returns and is now suitable for exterior use.
An advantage of producing mill size bales is
that, because of the reduced transport costs and more economic handling,
this can result in a higher price being obtained from the processor
or recycler, or even directly from a mill itself, for the waste material.
Therefore, the capital cost of the new V-Press 1160 Baler, which
