equipped with derricks were known as derrick lighters, and were commonplace during <strong>the</strong> nineteenth<br />

and twentieth centuries (Figure 56). The vertical end of <strong>the</strong> barge closest to <strong>the</strong> spud holders and step is<br />

covered in sheet iron, suggesting a use which created wear on that end of <strong>the</strong> barge. The lack of o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

distinguishing features on <strong>the</strong> vertical end is not consistent with <strong>the</strong> features expected of pile drivers<br />

and dredges, leaving derrick lighter as <strong>the</strong> most logical identification <strong>for</strong> A12.<br />
