creating value Beyond the ethical dimension, the challenge of our responsibility approach is to achieve balanced value-creating growth simultaneously for all our stakeholders: compensated shareholders, satisfied customers, self-fulfilled and motivated employees, and a civil society that is confident in us and better off as a result of our activities. This approach helps to better control the risks inherent to our business and to stimulate our ability to seize opportunities for growth and differentiation linked to new expectations from society. It helps us to optimize our procedures and methods of internal organization to limit our environmental footprint, reduce costs through more efficient and productive structures, and thus improve our overall performance. It also nurtures our values, strengthens our employees’ sense of ownership and commitment, and helps attract and build loyalty among the talent of today and tomorrow. four major commitments Our corporate social responsibility approach is built on four basic commitments: – recognizing and supporting our employees, the primary builders of social ties; – ensuring transparency, quality and security for our customers; – sharing the benefits of the digital world with the greatest possible number of people; – finding innovative solutions for a greener world. As a seamless extension of the three key priorities defined in 2008, “care,” “include” and “preserve”, these four commitments demonstrate our intention to strengthen the social aspect of our CSR approach. clear strategic priorities We have defined our strategic priorities in terms of corporate social responsibility based on two complementary elements: – analyzing our stakeholders’ expectations, identified through regular exchanges and studies conducted at Group level and in the main countries; – identifying risks and opportunities in terms of sustainable development and assessing their impact on the company’s growth. These priorities are updated at least once a year to take into account the changing context. For the 2010-2012 period, the analysis of our sustainability issues led us to define eight strategic priorities (see opposite). For each of these priorities, specific objectives complete with key performance indicators were defined. a strategy available in all entities Validated by the Executive Committee, our corporate social responsibility strategy is replicated in all of our business lines, operating divisions and subsidiaries. The involvement of the company’s senior management ensures that corporate social responsibility objectives are taken into consideration in all aspects of our business. The entire company is thus committed to achieving the ambitious objectives that we have set ourselves. application of the AA1000 principles The procedure for preparation of our 2008 corporate social responsibility report adheres to the significant aspects of the three principles (inclusivity, materiality, and responsiveness) of the AA1000 APS (2008) standard, the reference for corporate social responsibility in terms of taking stakeholder expectations into account (www.accountability21.net). inclusivity Identifying our stakeholders’ expectations is a decisive element in our process of identifying the challenges of sustainability. materiality In selecting sustainability challenges that we consider to be the most significant for our activities, we have taken account of our stakeholders’ stated expectations as well as our internal prioritization of risks which we review regularly. responsiveness Identifying the sustainability challenges that are significant for our activities helps us prepare action plans, which are reviewed annually. Our report is an essential response to our stakeholders’ stated expectations. Published annually, it explains our impacts and the progress we have achieved in meeting the commitments made to these stakeholders. external evaluations of our approach Our approach is regularly analyzed by ethical rating agencies, and we maintain a regular dialogue with socially responsible financial analysts and investors. France Telecom has appeared in the FTSE4Good index since 2002, as well as in the Aspi Eurozone and Ethibel Sustainability Excellence Indices, indices managed by the VIGEO rating agency. SAM (the rating agency for the Dow Jones Sustainability Index) has included the Group in the “SAM Silver Class” in its “Sustainability Yearbook” since 2008. The Group also appears in fourth place in the world classification “Tomorrow’s value rating” for the Information and Communication Technologies sector and in second place amongst telecommunications operators. This classification, the successor to the Accountability Rating, compares the environmental, social and societal performance of the largest international groups. 12 / creating social links for everyone’s benefit
