140 mobile phone models (91% of the
product line) have eco-labelling, which can
be consulted at Orange stores or on the
website orange.fr. In Spain, labelling has
also been available since 2009 on 38
mobile phones, accounting for 75% of the
product line.
The eco-label displays an overall handset
evaluation and assesses its environmental
performance according to five key indicators:
– CO 2 limitation measures the amount of
greenhouse gas emitted during the principal
stages of the product’s life: manufacture,
transport and utilization;
– energy efficiency assesses energy consumption
during product use and the
measures for reducing it;
– conservation of natural resources reflects
the efforts made to limit the percentage
of non-renewable or sensitive materials
from an environmental, economic or
social point of view;
– recyclability measures the contribution by
the handset, its packaging and its documentation
to limited waste production;
– eco-responsible design evaluates the
qualitative efforts made by the supplier in
designing its product. Specifically, this
covers its action to limit the use of potentially
hazardous substances, ensuring
good traceability of metals, and optimizing
the device’s electricity consumption.
Livebox 2: significant potential
for reducing consumption
Launched at the end of 2009,
Livebox 2 benefits from the
results of the LCA that we
conducted, in which the overall
environmental assessment
showed that electricity
consumption was predominantly
in the usage phase. This new
version thus has a Wi-Fi switch
with which the user can turn the
Wi-Fi signal on and off at his
convenience, while benefiting
from the other Livebox services.
This Wi-Fi button, as well as the
start/stop switch, allows the
Livebox to be turned off easily
at night or during holidays and
thus decreasing its energy
consumption by up to 30%. Its
packaging is made up of 98%
recycled paper.
less plastic waste with the mini
SIM card
In 2009, Orange United Kingdom
was the first European mobile
operator to distribute a “mini
SIM card.” A regular-sized SIM
card is inserted in a plastic
sleeve half the size. After an
initial test conducted among
monthly package customers,
this mini SIM card will soon be
extended to all customers. With
14 million SIM cards purchased
each year, Orange United
Kingdom could thus save
28 metric tons of plastic per year!
a life cycle analysis of the DSL
network
Among the life cycle analyses
conducted in 2009, the one for
the DSL network shows that
the Livebox accounts for more
than 90% of its impacts, hence
the importance of eco-design.
Apart from the Livebox, 80%
of the overall fixed-line network
impacts are due to DSL Access
Multipliers (DSLAM). This
analysis will allow the steering
of ADSL network eco-design
efforts towards reducing the
impacts of the Livebox and
DSLAM.
This labelling was also developed on the
Business market in France, where 80% of
the product line has eco-labelling.
Orange is the first European operator to
implement an environmental handset performance
evaluation. This procedure aims
to make customers aware of the environmental
impact of devices and allows them
to make a responsible choice. It also helps
encourage our suppliers to produce hand-
