Biographies of Workshop Presenters<br />
Phil Dahl-Bredine, married <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of seven children, received a B.A. in<br />
philosophy from Carleton College <strong>and</strong> an M.A. in <strong>the</strong> same from Northwestern<br />
<strong>University</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> 1960s <strong>and</strong> '70s, he worked in <strong>the</strong> civil rights <strong>and</strong> anti-Vietnam war<br />
movements, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic Worker, <strong>and</strong> as an organic farmer <strong>and</strong> beekeeper. After<br />
20 years working with community development projects in <strong>the</strong> Mexican-American<br />
communities of New Mexico, he became a Maryknoll lay missioner in 2001. He<br />
presently works with indigenous campesino groups (CEDICAM, <strong>the</strong> Center <strong>for</strong><br />
Integrated Rural Development of <strong>the</strong> Mixteca) <strong>and</strong> with popular movements<br />
resisting <strong>and</strong> building alternatives to <strong>the</strong> corporate globalization model in sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
Mexico <strong>and</strong> Central America.<br />
Kristin Dawkins is Vice President <strong>for</strong> International Programs at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>for</strong><br />
Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Trade Policy in Minneapolis, Minnesota, <strong>and</strong> Director of <strong>the</strong> IATP<br />
Program on Trade <strong>and</strong> Global Governance. She represents <strong>the</strong> Institute at a broad<br />
range of international negotiations <strong>and</strong> conferences. Her own work has focused on<br />
food security, environmental policy, <strong>and</strong> intellectual property rights. She created <strong>the</strong><br />
Global Governance program to address <strong>the</strong> legal relationship among different<br />
international treaties <strong>and</strong> to build support <strong>for</strong> a more democratic multilateral system.<br />
She is <strong>the</strong> author of Global Governance: The Battle <strong>for</strong> Planetary Power <strong>and</strong> Gene Wars:<br />
The Politics of Biotechnology, both available from Seven Stories Press. She has a<br />
master's degree in city planning from <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<br />
Alberto Gómez Flores is <strong>the</strong> national coordinator of <strong>the</strong> National Union of<br />
Autonomous Regional Peasant Organizations (UNORCA), a network of regional<br />
groups representing 200,000 farmers in Mexico. UNORCA works to secure farmers'<br />
access to l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> productive inputs, fair agricultural prices <strong>and</strong> credit, <strong>and</strong> a voice in<br />
agricultural policy-making. As coordinator of Vía Campesina activities in North<br />
America, Gómez is involved in many projects at <strong>the</strong> regional <strong>and</strong> international level.<br />
Toge<strong>the</strong>r with Vía Campesina-India, UNORCA coordinates a <strong>the</strong>matic working<br />
group on biodiversity <strong>and</strong> genetic resources. Originally from <strong>the</strong> Mexican state of<br />
Michoacán, Gómez began political work as a youth leader of his ejido <strong>and</strong> was later<br />
ejido president.<br />
