A.2.4 Us<strong>in</strong>g Gas Cyl<strong>in</strong>ders Safely<br />

Gases are used <strong>in</strong> a stone crush<strong>in</strong>g unit for repairs and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance work where weld<strong>in</strong>g or torch<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g is necessary. These gas cyl<strong>in</strong>ders are pressurized, which means that <strong>the</strong>y conta<strong>in</strong> enormous<br />

pressure. If <strong>the</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>der is cut open, for <strong>in</strong>stance dur<strong>in</strong>g an accident, <strong>the</strong>y can explode; <strong>the</strong> gases <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m can ignite and start a fire. It is clear that <strong>in</strong> such an event, workers and by-standers such as <strong>the</strong><br />

unit owner can be seriously hurt or even killed. Especially dangerous are:<br />

• cyl<strong>in</strong>ders of liquid propane or natural gas (LNG, LPG), even though <strong>the</strong>re is little pressure <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>der <strong>the</strong>y are highly flammable;<br />

• cyl<strong>in</strong>ders with Oxygen or Acetylene, which are pressurized and also highly flammable<br />

Prevent<strong>in</strong>g gas cyl<strong>in</strong>ders from explod<strong>in</strong>g or gases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cyl<strong>in</strong>ders from catch<strong>in</strong>g fire is <strong>the</strong>refore an<br />

important part of <strong>the</strong> safety of a crush<strong>in</strong>g unit.<br />
