In addition to <strong>the</strong> dust reduction system on <strong>the</strong> crushers, o<strong>the</strong>r measures need to accompany this effort,<br />

for <strong>in</strong>stance pav<strong>in</strong>g and clean<strong>in</strong>g of roads to suppress secondary dust emission by traffic, plant<strong>in</strong>g of a<br />

"green belt" of dust-captur<strong>in</strong>g trees around <strong>the</strong> plant and water harvest<strong>in</strong>g for use <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> plant.<br />

The total cost of plann<strong>in</strong>g, consult<strong>in</strong>g, purchase and <strong>in</strong>stallation of such systems can lie between<br />

10.000 and 20.000 USD depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallations and <strong>the</strong> cost of materials.<br />

A.3.3 Protect<strong>in</strong>g Hear<strong>in</strong>g from Noise<br />

Exposure to loud noise can ru<strong>in</strong> a person’s hear<strong>in</strong>g and cause much physical and psychological stress.<br />

Without <strong>the</strong> ability to hear, it is nearly impossible to perform a job task successfully and safely.<br />

Permanent hear<strong>in</strong>g loss can result from cont<strong>in</strong>uous noise exposure. It <strong>in</strong>dicates that parts of <strong>the</strong> socalled<br />

hear<strong>in</strong>g cells <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner ear have been destroyed. They will not grow back nor can <strong>the</strong>y be<br />

repaired. Hear<strong>in</strong>g is lost forever.<br />

The effects of noise on a person are not curable, but noise exposure can be controlled through many<br />

different technologies. In general, us<strong>in</strong>g work processes that are quieter, enclos<strong>in</strong>g noisy equipment,<br />

and us<strong>in</strong>g sound-absorb<strong>in</strong>g materials at impact sites is recommended to reduce <strong>the</strong> amount of noise<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g produced.
