B.11 Removal of Jammed Boulders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>in</strong> Crusher<br />

Nature of work:<br />

Every time <strong>the</strong> boulders are struck <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chute or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crusher, <strong>the</strong> stone is removed manually or by a<br />

pull<strong>in</strong>g rod. This activity is a regular occurrence.<br />

Risk Factors:<br />

− High potential exists for occurrence of MSD and back pa<strong>in</strong> due to work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> conf<strong>in</strong>ed spaces and<br />

spaces too small for safe lift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Over exertion while lift<strong>in</strong>g without proper hand protection may result <strong>in</strong> hand and leg <strong>in</strong>juries<br />

pulmonary diseases and <strong>in</strong>juries<br />

Trips and falls <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> pit are possible s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>re is no proper platform or barricade to enter <strong>in</strong> \to<br />

<strong>the</strong> chute and vision is disrupted when dust is released<br />

Possibility of boulders roll<strong>in</strong>g and hitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> operator while us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pull<strong>in</strong>g rod<br />

Not wear<strong>in</strong>g PPE may cause o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>juries<br />

RULA “priority score”: 7 Suggested Action: Investigate and change immediately<br />

REBA “priority score”: 11 Suggested Action: Very high score, action necessary NOW!<br />

Solutions:<br />

Mandatory tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on safe manual material handl<strong>in</strong>g practices<br />

Shoes, lea<strong>the</strong>r gloves, and nose masks are required for <strong>the</strong>se categories of workers<br />

Helmets may be provided to <strong>the</strong> persons remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> boulders from <strong>the</strong> chute<br />

Proper platform may be erected to work<br />

Shut down and secure <strong>the</strong> power to <strong>the</strong> crusher while this work is done (so-called LOG-OUT of<br />

power source) so that nobody can switch on power accidentally while o<strong>the</strong>rs work <strong>in</strong> or close to<br />

<strong>the</strong> crusher chute<br />

B.12 Truck load<strong>in</strong>g by bucket conveyors<br />

Nature of work:<br />

Ei<strong>the</strong>r a clean<strong>in</strong>g worker or <strong>the</strong> unit employee climbs onto <strong>the</strong> truck to level <strong>the</strong> fall<strong>in</strong>g material com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> truck.<br />

Risk Factors:<br />

− Fall from heights is possible s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> person is climb<strong>in</strong>g onto truck without <strong>the</strong> use of a ladder<br />

− Injuries are possible if <strong>the</strong> truck is moved dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> level<strong>in</strong>g process, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ation between <strong>the</strong> cleaner, driver and <strong>the</strong> unit operator<br />
