Activity 8.1: Concept <strong>of</strong> gender and gender differences<br />

Time: 10 minutes<br />

Engage the class in a short question and answer session in which the participants are asked to<br />

voice their understanding <strong>of</strong> ‘gender’. Give a short presentation explaining how ‘gender’ differs<br />

from ‘sex’ and clarify the differences.<br />

Discuss how society differentiates between activities that are perceived as ‘man’s work’ and<br />

‘woman’s work’.<br />

Activity 8.2: Gender and flash flood risk management<br />

Time: 15 minutes<br />

Discuss how issues <strong>of</strong> gender are <strong>of</strong> concern in flash flood risk management.<br />

trainer<br />

The class may not be aware that access to and control over<br />

various resources can be gender specific. Clarify that gender as<br />

well as economic status, age, and physical fitness can all affect<br />

flood risk.<br />
