This chapter (<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the last) have presented <strong>an</strong> overview of the Unified Modeling L<strong>an</strong>guage (or UML).<br />

The UML is <strong>an</strong> attempt to develop a third generation object oriented modeling l<strong>an</strong>guage for use with a<br />

variety of object oriented design methods. It c <strong>an</strong> be used for documenting the design of client -server,<br />

real-time, distributed as well as batch style applications. It captures the best elements of the notations<br />

used by a number of existing design methods including Booch, OMT <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Object</strong>ory while attempting to<br />

remain extensible, simple, clear <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> (relatively) concise. M<strong>an</strong>y CASE tool vendors are already<br />

committed to supporting the UML <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> it is being presented to the OMG by a consortium of<br />

org<strong>an</strong>izations as the basis of a st<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ard notation for object-oriented systems development.<br />
