REVISED PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (<strong>EIA</strong>) REGISTRATION<br />

FOR THE NEPISIGUIT FALLS GENERATING STATION MODIFICATION AND REHABILITATION PROJECT<br />

• <strong>the</strong> installation of a new 1.2 m (3.9 ft) diameter, 85.3 m (280 ft) long rubber dam on <strong>the</strong><br />

top of <strong>the</strong> spillway dam;<br />

• <strong>the</strong> replacement of <strong>the</strong> damaged trash racks and intake deck outside <strong>the</strong> power house<br />

building;<br />

• installation of post-tensioning anchors;<br />

• various ancillary works including <strong>the</strong> installation of a new chain link fence and gate and<br />

extension to <strong>the</strong> existing retaining wall at <strong>the</strong> north-end of <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ebay, removal of <strong>the</strong><br />

cooling water chambers and general maintenance on <strong>the</strong> fine trash racks and butterfly<br />

valves; and<br />

• <strong>the</strong> installation of various communications and electrical infrastructure.<br />

2.1.2 Project Activities<br />

The Project consists of eight main activities, as follows:<br />

• installation of Coffer Dam;<br />

• installation of a work plat<strong>for</strong>m;<br />

• concrete demolition and surface repair;<br />

• post-tension upgrade by setting of rock anchors;<br />

• installation of <strong>the</strong> rubber dam;<br />

• replacement of <strong>the</strong> trash rack system and intake deck;<br />

• ancillary works; and<br />

• removal of <strong>the</strong> Coffer Dam and work plat<strong>for</strong>m.<br />

Each of <strong>the</strong>se activities is fur<strong>the</strong>r discussed below in Section 2.2 (Construction).<br />

2.2 CONSTRUCTION<br />

Construction will begin after approvals under <strong>the</strong> provincial <strong>EIA</strong> and federal EA (if applicable)<br />

processes have been received, and following approval of <strong>the</strong> Project under <strong>the</strong> applicable<br />

provincial and federal acts and regulations. Provided <strong>the</strong>se approvals are granted, site<br />

preparation and physical construction could begin as early as June, 2012.<br />

There are several stages to <strong>the</strong> construction process, as outlined below. There are several<br />

activities that will also take place once repairs to <strong>the</strong> NFGS are completed. These have been<br />
