was quadrupled. Instead of a mere handful of theorists,
the socialists were now numbered by the million.
Their movement was world-wide, and the program of
every political party in the various countries was based
upon the principles laid down by Marx. The doctrines
which he had advocated from '47 to '64, and fought desperately
to retain throughout all the struggles with Bakounin,
were now the foundation principles of the movement
in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland,
Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Britain,
and even in other countries east and west of Europe.
