50 Years of Mushrooms
At the end of June this year, 50 years
of mushrooms will be celebrated by
those who have been moved by that
magical, psychedelic mushroom and
remember the Curandera Maria
Sabina (1894-1985), harbinger of the ‘holy mushroom’, a
shaman belonging to the
Mexican Indians of Mazateken.
Thanks to her, the secret of the
Mexican holy mushroom was
revealed to the rest of the world
in the fifties. She gave the New
York banker R. Gordon Wasson
(1898-1986) the psychedelic
magic mushroom (Psilocybe) to
eat during a nightly ceremony
and as such opened the path to
a modern, world-wide
mushroom culture.
The mushroom has been
used in Mexico since prehistoric
times, used by
shamans and their
patients in nightly ceremonies
for healing and
spiritual growth after it
had been blessed a holy
smoke ritual (Copal).
For the first time during the night from 29th to 39th June
1955, a white man called R. Gordon Wasson took part in
the Velada (Spanish night watch) ritual lead by Maria
Sabinas and reported on it in the May issue of the US
journal LIFE in 1957. This report had enormous consequences
for science and the international community. Dr:
Timothy Leary (1920-1997) popularised the magic mushroom

Hofmann born in 1906 ensured awareness
in Europe, especially after the
Swiss chemist found the same active
agent in a native mushroom. The
science of ethnomycology was created
in academic circles, alternative
cultures developed a ritual and recreative use of the
magic mushroom. This was an important sacrament for
the hippie culture in the sixties along with LSD and became
a part of the Goa and psychedelic trance party culture
