FEMA recommends the following mitigation tips AFTER A DISASTER:<br />

• Ask local building department about agencies that purchase<br />

property in areas that have been flood<strong>ed</strong>. You may be able<br />

to sell your property to a government agency <strong>and</strong> move to<br />

another location.<br />

• Determine how to rebuild your home to h<strong>and</strong>le the shaking<br />

of an earthquake or high winds. Ask local government,<br />

hardware dealer, or private home inspector for technical<br />

advice.<br />

• Consider options for flood-proofing your home. Determine<br />

if your home can be elevat<strong>ed</strong> to avoid future flood damage.<br />

• Make sure all construction complies with local building<br />

codes that pertain to seismic, flood, fire <strong>and</strong> wind hazards.<br />

Make sure roof is firmly secur<strong>ed</strong> to the main frame of the<br />

house. Make sure contractors know <strong>and</strong> follow the code <strong>and</strong><br />

construction is inspect<strong>ed</strong> by a local building inspector.<br />
