• NATIONAL SECURITY<br />

PS runs the Government Operations Centre, which monitors potential<br />

threats to the national interest around-the-clock. The Centre can also<br />

provide coordination <strong>and</strong> support in the event of a national emergency.<br />

• LAW ENFORCEMENT<br />

PS helps law enforcement agencies put in place the necessary policies <strong>and</strong><br />

technology for better data <strong>and</strong> intelligence sharing <strong>and</strong> contributes funds for<br />

policing services in over 300 First Nations <strong>and</strong> Inuit communities in partnership<br />

with provincial <strong>and</strong> territorial governments.<br />

• CORRECTIONS<br />

PS leads the development of f<strong>ed</strong>eral policy <strong>and</strong> legislation for Canada's<br />

correctional system in order to safely reintegrate offenders into the<br />

community.<br />

• CRIME PREVENTION<br />

PS works with volunteer groups, governments <strong>and</strong> businesses to support<br />

local solutions to crime <strong>and</strong> victimization.<br />

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IN CANADA:<br />

• CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION<br />

Critical infrastructure consists of physical <strong>and</strong> information technology<br />

facilities, networks, services <strong>and</strong> assets that are critical to the well-being,<br />

operations <strong>and</strong> continuity of our country. PS funds research <strong>and</strong> work with<br />

private sector partners to protect national critical infrastructure.<br />

The Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC) is responsible for<br />

monitoring threats <strong>and</strong> coordinating the national response to any cyber<br />

security incident. Its focus is the protection of national critical infrastructure<br />

against cyber incidents.<br />

• FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS<br />

PS administers the Joint <strong>Emergency</strong> Prepar<strong>ed</strong>ness Program (JEPP) <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). JEPP funding ensures<br />

communities have response skills <strong>and</strong> equipment in place to deal with<br />

emergency situations of any type. DFAA shares the costs of responding to<br />

<strong>and</strong> recovering from <strong>disaster</strong>s when the costs of doing so exce<strong>ed</strong> the fiscal<br />

capacity of provincial <strong>and</strong> territorial governments.<br />
