CHEMICAL BURNS<br />

Also see TERRORISM (in Section 2) for information, signs & symptoms,<br />

<strong>and</strong> treatment for several chemical agents in liquid, solid or aerosol forms<br />

that may cause chemical burns.<br />

Things to watch for…<br />

Rash or blisters<br />

Trouble breathing<br />

Dizziness or headache<br />

Name of the chemical<br />

What to do…<br />

• Rinse area with cool running water at least 15 minutes.<br />

• Remove any clothing, rings or jewelry that may have the<br />

chemical on it.<br />

• Make note of chemical name for m<strong>ed</strong>ical staff or hospital.<br />

ELECTRICAL BURNS<br />

Things to watch for…<br />

Electrical appliances or wires<br />

Down<strong>ed</strong> power lines<br />

Sparks <strong>and</strong>/or crackling noises<br />

Victim may have muscle spasms or trembling<br />

Lightning during a storm<br />

What to do…<br />

• BE AWARE… don’t put yourself in danger! If power line<br />

is down, wait for Fire Department or Power Company.<br />

• DO NOT go near victim until power is OFF! Pull plug at<br />

wall outlet or shut off breaker. Once off, okay to touch<br />

victim.<br />

• If victim struck by lightning, they can be touch<strong>ed</strong> safely!<br />

• Check ABCs ... Airway, Breathing, & Circulation if victim<br />

is pass<strong>ed</strong> out - you may ne<strong>ed</strong> to do Rescue Breathing<br />

or CPR. (see BREATHING PROBLEMS <strong>and</strong> HEART<br />

PROBLEMS)<br />
