What are YOU gonna do about…<br />

SHOCK<br />

According to the Mayo Clinic, shock may result from trauma, heatstroke,<br />

blood loss, an allergic reaction, severe infection, poisoning, severe burns or<br />

other causes. When a person is in shock, his or her organs aren't getting<br />

enough blood or oxygen, which if untreat<strong>ed</strong>, can lead to permanent organ<br />

damage or death.<br />

Things to watch for…<br />

Pale, cold, <strong>and</strong> clammy skin<br />

Rapid heartbeat but weak pulse<br />

Quick <strong>and</strong> shallow breathing<br />

Dizziness or confusion<br />

Bluish color on lips <strong>and</strong> fingertips or nails<br />

Sick to their stomach or puking<br />

Intense thirst<br />

What to do…<br />

• Call for an ambulance.<br />

• Look for injuries <strong>and</strong> watch ABCs… Airway, Breathing<br />

& Circulation.<br />

• Position victim using the following tips:<br />

alert <strong>and</strong> awake - place victim flat on their back with legs<br />

rais<strong>ed</strong> slightly<br />

pass<strong>ed</strong> out or puking - place victim on side to keep airway<br />

open<br />

• Loosen any tight or restrictive clothing.<br />

• Cover victim with a blanket or towel.<br />

• Talk calmly to victim until help arrives (whether they are<br />

alert or not).<br />
