The Port of Doha, Qatar, was <strong>the</strong> second<br />
biggest project for <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong> team dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
2010. Doha is an <strong>in</strong>land port, dredged<br />
from dry land. Physical modell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
conducted for <strong>the</strong> Port of Doha <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
studies of wave agitation and breakwater<br />
stability.<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> successes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong>’s<br />
team with <strong>the</strong>se two <strong>in</strong>ternational ports,<br />
negotiations are already underway<br />
between <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong> and <strong>the</strong> port authorities<br />
of Port Hedland and Doha for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
R&D. The proposed expansion of <strong>in</strong>ner<br />
harbour facilities for Port Hedland is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
discussed. The Port of Doha is look<strong>in</strong>g<br />
at commission<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong> to undertake<br />
studies relat<strong>in</strong>g to a proposed <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
canal to <strong>the</strong> north of <strong>the</strong> port.<br />
The <strong>CSIR</strong> model hall is reckoned to be<br />
<strong>the</strong> fourth biggest facility of its k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> world. The <strong>CSIR</strong> has seen signifi cant<br />
growth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> specialised fi eld of<br />
modell<strong>in</strong>g moored-ship motions, where<br />
new software has been developed as<br />
well as new measur<strong>in</strong>g techniques.<br />
New <strong>in</strong>novative techniques, us<strong>in</strong>g digital<br />
imagery, and <strong>the</strong> size and capability of<br />
facilities have helped to keep <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong><br />
ahead of <strong>in</strong>ternational competition.<br />
In terms of human capital development,<br />
students from Stellenbosch University,<br />
which is adjacent to <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong>’s facilities,<br />
annually do <strong>the</strong>ir practical work and<br />
obta<strong>in</strong> mentor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong>’s coastal<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and port <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
group. These <strong>in</strong>clude undergraduate and<br />
postgraduate eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students.<br />
