required by <strong>the</strong> heliostat to be optimally<br />

positioned at all times. The heliostat design<br />

specifi es low-cost components and simple<br />

systems.<br />

To capitalise on exist<strong>in</strong>g knowledge,<br />

<strong>the</strong> German Aerospace Centre, DLR,<br />

was called upon to design <strong>the</strong> layout<br />

of <strong>the</strong> heliostat fi eld. This requires <strong>the</strong><br />

optimisation of <strong>the</strong> tower height and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual positions of <strong>the</strong> many heliostats<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fi eld to m<strong>in</strong>imise mutual shad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and block<strong>in</strong>g, maximis<strong>in</strong>g heat collected<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> year and m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed heliostat and tower <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />

costs. Shad<strong>in</strong>g of a heliostat occurs when<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r heliostat, mov<strong>in</strong>g to track <strong>the</strong> sun,<br />

obstructs <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g sunlight at some time<br />

of <strong>the</strong> day; by contrast block<strong>in</strong>g occurs<br />

when sunlight refl ected by <strong>the</strong> heliostat<br />

is obstructed from reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> target.<br />

The site’s contours add ano<strong>the</strong>r level of<br />

complexity. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> design must<br />

guarantee enough power dur<strong>in</strong>g sunsh<strong>in</strong>e<br />

hours to simultaneously drive <strong>the</strong> gas<br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e and to build suffi cient heat reserve<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> storage system.<br />

Outputs<br />

While <strong>the</strong> research is ongo<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong><br />

facility is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> design phase, good<br />

progress has been made <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

expertise required for solar power<br />

research, with researchers undergo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> gas turb<strong>in</strong>e combustion<br />

and modell<strong>in</strong>g different solar power<br />

technologies. In turn <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong> shared <strong>the</strong><br />

knowledge it has generated to date at<br />

<strong>the</strong> SolarPaces 2010 conference, by<br />

present<strong>in</strong>g two papers. Four mechanical<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Master’s students – study<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> country’s only postgraduate course <strong>in</strong><br />

Concentrat<strong>in</strong>g Solar Power at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Stellenbosch – spent time work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>CSIR</strong> on CSP topics, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g experience<br />

and help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong> achieve research<br />

deliverables.<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

All work undertaken to date has been<br />

funded through <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong>’s parliamentary<br />

grant.<br />

Heliostat: (from helios, <strong>the</strong> Greek word for sun, and stat, as <strong>in</strong> stationary) is a device that<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes a mirror, which turns so as to keep refl ect<strong>in</strong>g sunlight toward a predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

target, compensat<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> sun’s apparent motions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sky.<br />

A gas turb<strong>in</strong>e capable of runn<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

natural gas (which is used commercially<br />

<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> world) was<br />

commissioned. Rated at 100kW, <strong>the</strong><br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e is large enough to behave <strong>in</strong> a<br />

manner representative of much larger gas<br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e plants and so prove <strong>the</strong> concept,<br />

yet small enough to greatly reduce <strong>the</strong><br />

capital outlay for <strong>the</strong> plant. While <strong>the</strong><br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e can run on solar and diesel <strong>in</strong> a<br />

hybrid model, <strong>CSIR</strong> researchers hope to<br />

operate <strong>the</strong> system on solar and biogas<br />

from sewage, replac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> diesel. The<br />

design of <strong>the</strong> tower, which houses <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>rmal storage system and <strong>the</strong> receiver,<br />

is <strong>in</strong> progress. This design has to heed<br />

aspects such as <strong>the</strong> weight of storage to<br />

enable runn<strong>in</strong>g for several hours when <strong>the</strong><br />

sun is not sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

A m<strong>in</strong>i-heliostat was <strong>in</strong>stalled to check <strong>the</strong> track<strong>in</strong>g and control system. Po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

where <strong>the</strong> focal beam that is refl ected from this s<strong>in</strong>gle heliostat is concentrated, is<br />

Thomas Roos with students from <strong>the</strong> universities of Stellenbosch and Johannesburg.<br />
