<strong>in</strong> London <strong>in</strong> 2012, <strong>the</strong> necessity of data<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and ongo<strong>in</strong>g athlete feedback<br />

is becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly important <strong>in</strong><br />

striv<strong>in</strong>g for success. Based on <strong>the</strong> analysis<br />

provided, coaches and athletes have been<br />

able to focus <strong>the</strong>ir efforts more specifi cally<br />

on m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g highlighted weaknesses and<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g strengths to achieve <strong>the</strong> best<br />

possible performance.<br />

Gett<strong>in</strong>g to grips: Components of sports science and technology<br />

In<strong>format</strong>ion and knowledge management: Includes <strong>the</strong> provision of databases and data m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g technologies to manage and monitor<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion about athletes. Such databases can conta<strong>in</strong> personal <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion, video footage, contact details, previous performance<br />

data or medical <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion.<br />

Notational analysis: Provides objectivity and quantifi cation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> identifi cation of critical <strong>in</strong>cidents (tactical and strategic) <strong>in</strong> game<br />

performance that <strong>in</strong>fl uence <strong>the</strong> outcome of a game or <strong>in</strong>dividual performance. In<strong>format</strong>ion can be delivered <strong>in</strong> real time by <strong>the</strong> sports<br />

technologist to <strong>the</strong> coach, to immediately <strong>in</strong>fl uence game strategy. The <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion can also be processed and summarised <strong>in</strong> video<br />

<strong>format</strong> for consultations with coaches and/or players prior to <strong>the</strong>ir next practice session.<br />

Video-based biomechanical analysis: A range of powerful software tools for <strong>the</strong> analysis of high-speed video material, thus allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for detailed analysis of selected events (e.g. <strong>the</strong> take off of a high jumper).<br />

Telemetry: Advanced technology that enable remote monitor<strong>in</strong>g of athletic performance <strong>in</strong> real time via telemetry. Current technology<br />

permits <strong>the</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g of heart rate over Bluetooth for athletes perform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a defi ned space (tennis, cricket, soccer, netball, etc.) or<br />

attributes such as velocity, altitude and position via GPS over GSM or radio transmission.<br />

Track<strong>in</strong>g: Provides <strong>the</strong> ability to monitor position, direction and velocity of an athlete us<strong>in</strong>g a variety of technologies. Some systems<br />

now permit real-time monitor<strong>in</strong>g of this <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion, provid<strong>in</strong>g unprecedented <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion for decision support.<br />

SA <strong>in</strong> European waters: <strong>CSIR</strong> analysts accompanied <strong>the</strong> national swimm<strong>in</strong>g team on tour <strong>in</strong> Europe and at <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth<br />

Games <strong>in</strong> 2010. Video footage of <strong>the</strong> team’s performance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water was analysed and <strong>in</strong>terpreted to identify areas of strength<br />

and weakness of <strong>in</strong>dividuals and relative to closest competitors.<br />
