SANSA Space Operations<br />

The <strong>CSIR</strong> Satellite Application Centre now<br />

forms part of <strong>the</strong> South African National<br />

Space Agency (SANSA). SANSA Space<br />

Operations processes large amounts of<br />

data. It centralised Earth observation<br />

services <strong>in</strong>to a spatial portal that acquires,<br />

processes and distributes remotely-sensed<br />

data from Earth observation satellites. The<br />

data are processed as remote-sens<strong>in</strong>g<br />

products and imagery and provide<br />

valuable <strong>in</strong>put for a broad range of<br />

decision makers.<br />

Chlorophyll Globally Integrated Network<br />

(ChloroGIN)<br />

This network aims to broadly dissem<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

accessible mar<strong>in</strong>e Earth observation<br />

products, and empower users through<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. <strong>CSIR</strong> researchers are closely<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved with implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se aims for<br />

Africa through EU-funded projects such<br />

African Monitor<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Environment for<br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>able Development (AMESD)<br />

This is a cont<strong>in</strong>ent-wide, pan-African<br />

project for <strong>the</strong> development of geo<strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion<br />

systems to improve decisionmak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

processes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fi elds of<br />

environmental resource and environmental<br />

risk management <strong>in</strong> Africa.<br />

Global Water Quality In<strong>format</strong>ion<br />

System The Global Water Quality<br />

In<strong>format</strong>ion System seeks to develop a<br />

<strong>full</strong>y operational, spatially-comprehensive<br />

water quality <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion system <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>land<br />

and coastal waters. Contribut<strong>in</strong>g national<br />

research <strong>in</strong>itiatives are <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong>-funded<br />

Safe Water Earth Observation System<br />

(SWEOS) project, develop<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

capability for local pilot ecosystems; and<br />

aligned DST-funded <strong>in</strong>itiatives to build<br />

operational capability.<br />

The <strong>CSIR</strong> processes <strong>the</strong> images from <strong>the</strong><br />

MODIS satellite.<br />
