One PhD and two MSc students, three<br />
<strong>in</strong>terns and two postdoctoral students will<br />
work on <strong>the</strong> project and fur<strong>the</strong>r expansion<br />
is expected. Once more clays have been<br />
collected and modifi ed, <strong>the</strong> project is<br />
expected to produce patents.<br />
In collaboration with university research<br />
groups, <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>in</strong>tends us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se<br />
lower cost nanoclays to develop <strong>the</strong><br />
nanocomposites <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> South Africa<br />
which will create jobs and through products<br />
manufactured <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, result <strong>in</strong><br />
benefi ts to ord<strong>in</strong>ary people. It <strong>in</strong>tends to<br />
also produce nanocomposite pa<strong>in</strong>ts and<br />
plastics with unique properties, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
anti-bacterial properties based on silver<br />
nanoparticles.<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g and collaborators<br />
That NCNSM was created <strong>in</strong> 2007 as<br />
part of <strong>the</strong> implementation of government’s<br />
National Nanotechnology Strategy. The<br />
centre is hosted by <strong>the</strong> <strong>CSIR</strong> as one of<br />
its emerg<strong>in</strong>g research areas, and is cofunded<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Department of Science and<br />
Technology. Collaborators are numerous<br />
and <strong>in</strong>clude local and <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
universities and scientifi c <strong>in</strong>stitutes.<br />

An important aspect of <strong>the</strong> project will<br />
be <strong>the</strong> licens<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> technologies to<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. The excellent characterisation<br />
equipment as well as good collaboration<br />
with universities and various local and<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>dustries will enable <strong>the</strong> centre<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g to grips<br />
Nanoclay: A very old m<strong>in</strong>eral derived from wea<strong>the</strong>red volcanic ash, compris<strong>in</strong>g 1<br />
nanometer th<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>eral plates stacked toge<strong>the</strong>r like a deck of play<strong>in</strong>g cards, but just<br />
about 1 million times smaller. Untreated clay powders are used to bleach beer and w<strong>in</strong>e<br />
and to absorb pollutants <strong>in</strong> water. However, through chemical modifi cation <strong>the</strong> plates can<br />
be pried and kept apart by specifi c organic molecules called surfactants. When properly<br />
dispersed <strong>in</strong> a polymer (plastic) matrix <strong>the</strong>y show <strong>the</strong>ir great potential.<br />
The newly-acquired, <strong>in</strong>dustry-scale extruder at <strong>the</strong> National Centre for Nano-Structured Materials is a mach<strong>in</strong>e which is normally<br />
used for melt<strong>in</strong>g a plastic polymer and <strong>the</strong>n convert<strong>in</strong>g it to a certa<strong>in</strong> shape through a process called extrusion. The extruder can<br />
be used to mix <strong>the</strong> polymer with additives or nanostructured materials to prepare a polymer nanocomposite <strong>in</strong> order to enhance <strong>the</strong><br />
properties of <strong>the</strong> polymer such as fi re retardance performance.<br />
