The importance of manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> South Africa is evident from its signifi cant<br />
contribution to exports, job creation and its contribution to <strong>the</strong> gross domestic<br />
product (GDP) of <strong>the</strong> country. The challenges lie <strong>in</strong> our ability to add value<br />
to raw material before export<strong>in</strong>g; create new manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries; and<br />
improve our competitiveness even <strong>in</strong> an adverse economic climate. The <strong>CSIR</strong><br />
envisages contribut<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> size, competitiveness and susta<strong>in</strong>ability of <strong>the</strong><br />
South African manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry through its focus on:<br />
• Microsystems and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• Smart systems<br />
• Advanced materials and composites<br />
• Additive manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• The establishment of a titanium <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
• The establishment of a bio-manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
