In the case of projects funded by the Rural Development Foundation we managed to sign contracts in time and money was transferred to our centre’s accounts before the start of the project. Keep on trying, take up new challenges and reach out to other people. Talk to people and work patiently toward your goals. Everyone faces difficulties and adversities. Don’t worry about them. Approach problems with calm and reason. Confront them. You’re going to get there! Złocieniec Cultural Centre We focus on cultural education and education through art. We promote national values and regional traditions among the region’s inhabitants. Our goal is to identify, stimulate and meet cultural needs and interests. We facilitate art education, hosting dance, music, theatre, vocal, visual art, woodcarving, ceramic and physical exercise workshops. We organise multiple initiatives, competitions and artistic workshops funded under Polish and international programmes. 100 Courtyard Memories Come Out of the Shade The Courtyard Memories Come Out of the Shade project is coordinated by Roots, a Łódźbased centre for environmental activities. The central aim of this unique venture is to promote the culture of the Łódź region by popularising old courtyard games from Łódź and the surrounding area. The project spans multiple generations: from children to adults to seniors. It helps refresh the memories of older participants and unleash their youthful energy, while stirring young imaginations and providing an antidote for boredom. t he project was conceived and created by Aleksandra Bogusiak. The idea of the project came from extensive experience of the Roots centre in delivering active education to children and youth, from frequent formal and informal conversations with teachers, parents and seniors as well as observations of our city and its inhabitants. It’s plain to see that children are spending more and more time passively rather than playing with their friends. Courtyards of residential estates, which only 10-15 years ago were teeming with life, are now being converted into parking lots. All this led us to launch a project that would offer young people an alternative way of spending their free time – far from computers and TV screens. We believe that traditional games offer much in the way of development, education, culture and integration. the project We started the project by inviting senior citizens from Łódź Day Care Centres to join our efforts. With them as experts, we created tentative descriptions of the rules of games they remembered from childhood. Then we tested the games with children and teens. As they were having fun in traditional game workshops, adults had a chance to demonstrate their literary talents submitting work to our Courtyard Memories literary competition. In the meantime we created game kits with items for playing hoop rolling, tipcat, footbag and other old games. Then we distributed the kits free of charge among interested organisations. The project culminated in the Old Games Picnic, an outdoor event held under the slogan “Free the Memories!” Temporary playing fields for games such as tipcat, bottle caps, rounders and stovelid races were created in Old Town Park in Łódź. The games were taught by Roots’ educators and seniors. At the same time handicraft workshops were held in which participants made decorations and toys from natural materials. Another key event were seminars promoting outdoor leisure activities. We met with teachers, animators and volunteers in Łódź, Piotrków Trybunalski and Sieradz, where we presented the theory and practice of organising enjoyable and useful outdoor leisure activities. Seminar participants will share their enthusiasm for old games with children and teens in their culture animation efforts. The project culminated in the publication of a book with detailed descriptions of the rules of several games, photos and emotional memories from childhood courtyards. The book was distributed to Łódź schools, libraries, community centres and NGOs.
