Critical education projects, especially in rural areas,
are difficult endeavours that require strong educational
and organisational skills. The key to success is a dedicated
team willing to put in some hard work that will not
necessarily be appreciated by the community and local
authorities. Required skills include the ability to tactfully
solve sensitive problems, diffuse conflicts and reinforce
positive aspects, so that art may prevail over divisions.

The artwork created by participants
was presented at the final exhibition at the
Association of Polish Artists and Designers’
Na Piętrze Gallery, during which a multimedia
presentation was held. Panorama of the
New Chances and Strengths of Chrząstowice
Commune, a large-format graffiti celebrating
the workshops, was mounted on the front
facade of the community centre in Suchy
Bór. Karina Krajczy helped the organiser to
run the workshops. Magdalena Jurkiewicz
and Paulina Ptaszyńska led film and animation
workshops.
target groups / methods
The series of workshops was intended for
children and young people aged 10–18. In

practice, most participants were between
9 and 13 years of age. The project included
workshops, talks, lectures, trips, posters
that advertised the workshops and the exhibition,
invitations to the exhibition opening,
thank-you notes for special guests, a DVD
movie and documentation as well as a website
of the project.

The project was funded by a grant from
the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
Chrząstowice Commune, which offered
a space in Suchy Bór and a school
bus, was the project partner. Musica Vena,
a band of Opole philharmonic musicians, allowed
us to use the band’s klezmer music in
the film and documentation of the project.
The Opole Branch of the Association of Polish
Artists and Designers offered the spaces
of Na Piętrze Gallery as well as its vacation
and training centre in Such Bór. Mieszko
S.A. provided sweets.
challenges
Due to low turnout, the launch of the project
was delayed and took place in September
after the school year began, not in July
as previously planned. Another problem
was the theme of the project, namely Polish-Silesian
relations, including the appropriateness
of signs with double Polish and
German names. The children were reluctant
to discuss these issues, saying they were
not allowed to.
Lucilla Kossowska
is a painter, educator, English graduate,
the founder of the Education Through
Art Institute and a board member of
InSEA, the International Society for
Education Through Art. She is currently
implementing her programme
English Through Art. In 2007 Lucilla
ran a series of workshops called After
Church On Sunday. In 2011 she completed
the Magic Pencil Communal Kids’
Art Cooperative project as part of the
Human Capital Operational Programme.
Her partners include Children’s Art
Centre in Poznań and Centre for Contemporary
Art Ujazdowski Castle in
Warsaw. She has staged over 40 solo and
group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
Lucilla lives in Suchy Bór.
