Critical education projects, especially in rural areas,<br />

are difficult endeavours that require strong educational<br />

and organisational skills. The key to success is a dedicated<br />

team willing to put in some hard work that will not<br />

necessarily be appreciated by the community and local<br />

authorities. Required skills include the ability to tactfully<br />

solve sensitive problems, diffuse conflicts and reinforce<br />

positive aspects, so that art may prevail over divisions.<br />

The artwork created by participants<br />

was presented at the final exhibition at the<br />

Association of Polish Artists and Designers’<br />

Na Piętrze Gallery, during which a multimedia<br />

presentation was held. Panorama of the<br />

New Chances and Strengths of Chrząstowice<br />

Commune, a large-format graffiti celebrating<br />

the workshops, was mounted on the front<br />

facade of the community centre in Suchy<br />

Bór. Karina Krajczy helped the organiser to<br />

run the workshops. Magdalena Jurkiewicz<br />

and Paulina Ptaszyńska led film and animation<br />

workshops.<br />

target groups / methods<br />

The series of workshops was intended for<br />

children and young people aged 10–18. In<br />

practice, most participants were between<br />

9 and 13 years of age. The project included<br />

workshops, talks, lectures, trips, posters<br />

that advertised the workshops and the exhibition,<br />

invitations to the exhibition opening,<br />

thank-you notes for special guests, a DVD<br />

movie and documentation as well as a website<br />

of the project.<br />

funding<br />

The project was funded by a grant from<br />

the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.<br />

Chrząstowice Commune, which offered<br />

a space in Suchy Bór and a school<br />

bus, was the project partner. Musica Vena,<br />

a band of Opole philharmonic musicians, allowed<br />

us to use the band’s klezmer music in<br />

the film and documentation of the project.<br />

The Opole Branch of the Association of Polish<br />

Artists and Designers offered the spaces<br />

of Na Piętrze Gallery as well as its vacation<br />

and training centre in Such Bór. Mieszko<br />

S.A. provided sweets.<br />

challenges<br />

Due to low turnout, the launch of the project<br />

was delayed and took place in September<br />

after the school year began, not in July<br />

as previously planned. Another problem<br />

was the theme of the project, namely Polish-Silesian<br />

relations, including the appropriateness<br />

of signs with double Polish and<br />

German names. The children were reluctant<br />

to discuss these issues, saying they were<br />

not allowed to.<br />

Lucilla Kossowska<br />

is a painter, educator, English graduate,<br />

the founder of the Education Through<br />

Art Institute and a board member of<br />

InSEA, the International Society for<br />

Education Through Art. She is currently<br />

implementing her programme<br />

English Through Art. In 2007 Lucilla<br />

ran a series of workshops called After<br />

Church On Sunday. In 2011 she completed<br />

the Magic Pencil Communal Kids’<br />

Art Cooperative project as part of the<br />

Human Capital Operational Programme.<br />

Her partners include Children’s Art<br />

Centre in Poznań and Centre for Contemporary<br />

Art Ujazdowski Castle in<br />

Warsaw. She has staged over 40 solo and<br />

group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.<br />

Lucilla lives in Suchy Bór.<br />
