challenges
Local conflicts erupted and divisions
emerged within the community. They were
partly overcome and difficult situations were
avoided thanks to carefully designed activities
which did not favour either side of the
conflict.
The key rule to
remember is that activities
should be carefully
designed, preferably based
on joint participation and
ethnography. You also
need patience and a strong
commitment to building
good relations with the
community.
and their film documentation), others – at all
residents of Broniów and Ostałówek (night
cinema, perfo-bus, bus stop repainting,
a soccer match between the villages etc.).
We worked with people who build their own
agricultural equipment, self-designed cars
and gyms. We invited folk groups and local
musicians. We visited family homes (social
cooking; Frame, a project that involved collecting
holy pictures), collaborated with the
voluntary fire brigade (a mural was painted
with the fire brigade emblem; the firefighters
helped with the illumination of the soccer
match). We also talked to rural community
workers and held an exhibition on
their ideas in Broniów’s cultural centre. At
all times culture animation and art activities
were accompanied by ethnographic observations
conducted by both animators and
ethnographers.
funding
The project was funded by the National Centre
for Culture as part of the Culture Observatory
Programme, and by the Mazovian
Culture and Art Centre. The Department
of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology and
the Culture Cathedral Association were our
partners in this project.
