challenges
The biggest challenge was to gain the trust
of local residents and get them to share their
memories. We were helped in our efforts by
the Sanctuary parish priest and the residents
we first talked to.
A lack of manners can
sometimes ruin a project.
To launch a project, you
don’t need big money –
one good method is to
look for simple solutions.
For instance, the first
courtyard game in our
project was painted on
a bed sheet. Find out
where you can get funding
for your project, which
institutions award grants,
and fill out applications.
got cards showing locations where envelopes
with mysterious letters were hidden
and where storytellers recounted family
stories. Dominik Gadomski, city guide and
Warsaw expert, led a walk along the route
of key pre-war locations, including a linen
pressing business, shoe repair shop and
a blacksmith’s.
The Roots of Siekierki also includes
the Siekierki Gallery of Forgotten Places,
a series of concrete pole sculptures inspired
by an old photo by Jan and Zofia Strumiłło
and Jan Sukiennik. The project is documented
in a book, The Roots of Siekierki, the only
published account of the neighbourhood’s
history.
target groups / methods
We worked with local residents and young
people associated with Carriage House. Our
methods included interviews and workshops.
and skills. The centre runs several workshops
and artistic groups, hosts regular
performances, nationwide festivals and
competitions, and international projects.
In 2011 the Polish Ministry of Education
