Success of a project depends on multiple
factors. In our case, the moment of selecting
women participants through audition was key.
Their charisma, teamwork skills and creativity
influenced the character of Women’s Wola. When
working on a project, the director shouldn’t
dish out ready-made stage solutions. Her role
is an advisory one – she may give tips but
should not build the characters. It is the role
of the participants to find stage energy within
themselves, to experience a brainstorm.
target groups / methods
The target group were women of different
ages and social statuses living in or associated
with the district of Wola. The main
methods used in the workshops were drama
and improvisation, which mostly appeal
to the intuition and imagination of
participants. They teach how to be active
and open, stress teamwork, sensitise.
Our project was covered by TVN’s
Uwaga (Taka jest Wola Kobiet), TVN Warszawa
(two documentaries) and Warsaw’s

newspapers including Życie Warszawy and
Gazeta Wyborcza.
funding
The project was part-funded by the District
of Wola.
Project partners included Chłodna
25, which offered us space for rehearsals
(where we also opened our production), and
Działdowska Cultural Centre.
challenges
The only problems we encountered were logistical
– the rehearsals were held during the
day, often forcing participants to reschedule
their routine. Some women found it a challenge
to improvise during the first rehearsals
with the complete script. However, their
extraordinary motivation, acting talent and
adaptive skills allowed them to quickly master
the script. Our focus was always on improvisation
and wordplay.

Association
The association was founded in 2008 by
a group of people associated with the
University of Warsaw’s Documentary
Laboratory. What brought us together
was a passion for making documents. We
have so far mounted four photography
exhibitions: Two Generations, One Perspective.
The association’s theatre projects,
including Romeo and Juliet 40
Years Later, carried out with senior
citizens from Mokotów, or the project
Panowie Wolą (another play on words
using the name of the district, roughly
translatable as “Gentlemen Prefer”),
conceived as a response to the women’s
version, are very popular among participants.
This year, as part of the Orange
Academy Foundation, the association
completed an extensive project called
Wola Doc, a series of photography, film,
theatre and visual workshops for young
people.
