Art
on Wheels
Art on Wheels is a travelling
educational project of
interactive workshops focused
on architecture and the
protection and promotion of
cultural heritage at historic
sites in small localities, mostly
villages. The workshops are
designed for school-age youth
and interested residents.
t
he initial impetus for the project
came from our interests,
experience working with historic
buildings, travels across Poland, observations
and contacts with people. Local
cultural heritage has huge educational potential
– we wanted to use it to develop
workshops similar to those offered by major
museums, aimed at pupils from small towns
and rural areas. We have often seen people
“mishandle” historic buildings and misunderstand
their context, so we decided to
change this. We also noticed that recently
there has been much focus on contemporary
art, while old art appears somewhat
neglected. We wanted to put a modern spin
on the past and, above all, make it interesting
and accessible. We set ourselves the
goal of “setting art free” and showing that
appreciation for the Louvre and Picasso’s
work starts with historic buildings in places
like Tarczek and Lipnica Murowana. Our
logo – Mona Lisa on a scooter – is a fitting
illustration of this.
the project
Art on Wheels workshops have been held
since 2009 in local historic buildings, mostly
temples. We have taken them to over
50 towns and villages in Lesser Poland,
Świętokrzyskie and Podkarpackie Provinces,
as well as to Argentina, where we worked
with the local Polish community. The workshops
cover many topics in the fields of art,
iconography, architecture, artistic techniques,
style, perception of the work of art
etc. They also touch on the issues of tourism,
protection of cultural heritage and active
promotion of culture and regions. Our
project introduces local residents to basic
concepts, enabling them to navigate through
culture. They learn that a “portal” can be
something more than a web portal, and
a “cabinet” – more than just a piece of house
furniture, since it also functions in church
context as a sacred cabinet.
