Sadie echoes many w<strong>in</strong>emakers <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> and elsewhere who don’t “play the award<br />

game” ( Sadie, 2011 Appendix H ) and who don’t want their w<strong>in</strong>es as collector’s items or<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities, now or <strong>in</strong> the future.<br />

<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n w<strong>in</strong>es have never become regular features <strong>in</strong> the pages of ‘The <strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong><br />

Advocate’, Robert Parker’s <strong>in</strong>fluential US buyer’s journal. Part of the problem was his – and<br />

his key tasters - lack of familiarity with SA w<strong>in</strong>es given their small role on the world stage. SA<br />

Master of <strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Greg Sherwood wrote on the <strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Anorak website <strong>in</strong> 2002 that,<br />

‘.. to my knowledge, no large and comprehensive tast<strong>in</strong>g of all the top ( SA ) w<strong>in</strong>es<br />

has been carried out recently <strong>in</strong> the way Mr Parker has just done with boutique<br />

Australian offer<strong>in</strong>gs’ ( Sherwood, 2002 ).<br />

This may change now that ‘The <strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Advocate’ has a new taster with responsibility for<br />

<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>. Neal Mart<strong>in</strong>, a British w<strong>in</strong>e writer, is more familiar with SA w<strong>in</strong>es and perhaps,<br />

more k<strong>in</strong>dly <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed toward them as his comments <strong>in</strong> 8.2.3 show. Good news for some, but<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> Eben Sadie has his doubts, fear<strong>in</strong>g that w<strong>in</strong>emakers might start to make w<strong>in</strong>es to ga<strong>in</strong><br />

high scores, someth<strong>in</strong>g SA w<strong>in</strong>es have largely avoided so far.<br />

Still, more than 100 SA w<strong>in</strong>es have been given rat<strong>in</strong>gs of the all-important 90+ po<strong>in</strong>ts over<br />

the years by Parker and several, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Ken Forrester’s FMC Chen<strong>in</strong> Blanc, Sadie’s<br />

Columella and Warwick’s Trilogy have achieved 95 po<strong>in</strong>ts. Normally, 95 po<strong>in</strong>ts would ensure<br />

<strong>in</strong>stant worldwide attention, esteem and immediate un-availability. In the case of most<br />

French, Italian and Spanish blue chip w<strong>in</strong>es, such a rat<strong>in</strong>g would make them very scarce<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed, whatever was not withheld at the Château / Estate would be taken by agents or<br />

importers who would adjust their prices with ris<strong>in</strong>g demand. Very few bottles would make the<br />

shelves of retailers and it would be necessary to jo<strong>in</strong> a wait<strong>in</strong>g list to purchase by the case<br />

through a large dealer such as Berry Bros. & Rudd <strong>in</strong> the UK. You might or might not be<br />

lucky and request<strong>in</strong>g, say, ten cases might see you receive three. With <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n w<strong>in</strong>es<br />

this is not often the case. Part of the problem is that most SA w<strong>in</strong>es are easily available,<br />

there is rarely the clamour on release which sees them disappear overseas or to<br />

corporations. Some SA w<strong>in</strong>es are <strong>in</strong> huge demand, of course, but most suffer because;<br />

“Supply is bigger than demand, there is no scarcity value, it is too easy to get the<br />

w<strong>in</strong>es” ( Peens, 2011 appendix F ).<br />

Scarcity <strong>in</strong>creases desire; a Château Latour on a supermarket shelf anywhere <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

would be a rare event and would not be there for many hours, a Meerlust Rubicon can be<br />
