possibly on behalf of several friends or a club etc. ). Despite a limited number of w<strong>in</strong>es<br />

available, their lack of track record ( as w<strong>in</strong>es are usually ‘one offs’ – other than the<br />

reputation of the producer ) and the bigger buy<strong>in</strong>g power of trade buyers, who are spend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

nearly three times more each than private buyers ( Table 12 ), there is at least an<br />

opportunity for <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>vestment direct from the producer.<br />

Though most of the CWG w<strong>in</strong>es are made specifically for the auction, some are separated<br />

cuvées from selected barrels. Ataraxia and LeRiche have created ‘auction’ w<strong>in</strong>es separately<br />

from their normal production and whilst it is unfair to make direct comparisons ( auction<br />

w<strong>in</strong>es are best selection, s<strong>in</strong>gle v<strong>in</strong>eyard [ Le Riche ], v<strong>in</strong>ified separately ) with their retail<br />

varietal, it is possible to exam<strong>in</strong>e the prices for these w<strong>in</strong>es at auction. Table 13 shows the<br />

average price achieved at the CWG auction <strong>in</strong> three years for the auction version of these<br />

two w<strong>in</strong>es aga<strong>in</strong>st the approximate cellar door price of non CWG w<strong>in</strong>e at the time. In all<br />
